Either if you´re coming in oct or may, you´re bound to get Rio at its best time of the year. The sun will be setting by 6 pm in both months and the wheater is gonna be great - warm but not badly hot as in summer. Finally, the flight between Rio and São Paulo takes 45 min.

Always been to Rio in September in my three visits and weather was always great. A little bit humid sometimes. The flight from Sao Paolo to Rio (GIG airport) is about US$300-350, and it is actually a quick one-hour flight. Have fun, Norman :)

the price of the flight betweeen sao paulo and rio depends on the kind of ticket you get, how early you book, promotions,etc...; check the airlines sites like GOL and TAM to know the prices and get the best fares for your dates

October is an excellent period to visit Rio. There's no much rain and the temperature is in a light growing. The plane from Sao Paulo to Rio, nowadays, is about US 30 to 50 (it means about 75 to 130 in local money - REAL/REAIS) plus boarding taxes. Besides GOL and TAM, you should search OCEAN AIR and a new company called AZUL. If it's possible, choose the Santos Dumont Airport to arrive. Don't choose the Tom Jobin Airport (GIG), because it's faraway from Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and so the taxi will be expensive. Besides, be carefull when you cath the taxi. Choose a taxi that belongs a COOPERATIVA (cooperative). Avoid yellow taxis when it's not written COOP or COOPERATIVA. I really like the blue and the red taxis (COOPERTRAMO, COOTRAMO or COOPATUR). They are safe, although they're more expensive, but the tax is prepaid. Even you forget a bagage they'll back to you.

Sorry, I writing not to tell about apartment, but to correct the informations about flights from Sao Paulo to Rio. You can have a budget trip (100,00 reais = US 40) plus tax, if you go by GOL Airlines (www.voegol.com.br) and Ocean Air (http://www.oceanair.com.br), except at weekends and rush hour. However, the trip costs much more if you rather go by TAM. As someone said, you should search at the Internet.
P.S: I don't know how are your urges to get an apartment. There's a friend who has an apartment at Copacabana, but I don't know if it will be free when you arrive. About Ipanema, I don't know.
