Hi, can anyone advice me whether its better (vis a vis costing, deals, less headache) to book a tour to the kruger private reserves or get a safari together yourself and book directly thru the resorts and hire a car to get there.

Hello
We found that hiring a car was the best way to go.You will have to book accommodation yourself, though.
We picked up our hire car at Johannesburg airport, and drove up to Kruger.
Having your own transport gives you the freedom of choice as to when, where and what you want to see.
I have put information on Kruger Park into my tip section of Kruger National Park page- but feel free to emailme if you need any more information.

I'd definitely get Louis advise...

We recently visited SA for our honeymoon, and did everything with our rented car...just remember to book your car a couple of days in advance... and if you can, get a GPS.

If you are not used to drive, or want to take tours, then I can recommend Thompson Tours (www.thompsons.co.za), very reliable.

Have a great time!!

Hi!

It's definitely possible to do it yourself. Not sure where you are from but just consider that you will be driving on the left-hand side of the road. It's not that easy if you are not used to it.

You could also consider a private guide, to drive and accompany you throughout your safari.

Is it cheaper to drive yourself? Safe? Easy to get around? Most documentaries you see on tv are long stretches of dirt road - would the cars be reliable not to break down in the middle of nowhere??

Oriana- regarding 'long stretches of road' and cars breaking down-- The Kruger National Park is a TOURIST DESTINATION. There are always cars, buses & Park Rangers around. And everyone carries a mobile phone nowadays.
If you have never been there-how can you make judgement or comment?? It perfectly safe.

Hi.

I'd actually recommend a combination. Hire car at the airport and drive to your accommodation. Depending on where that is, the N14 / Belfast / Lydenburg / Sabie route is the most attractive (rather than the boring N14 highway all the way). The roads are excellent and easy to drive.

But for the actual safari, I'd recommned - for your first time at least - to get on an organised safari drive (your accommodation should arrange for you). If you self-drive yourself you will most likely miss a lot of the game (we still do and have been on many safaris!) and also the facts, background and stories about the animals which brings it all to life.
