You can get a coach from Fort William to Skye.
http://www.rapsons.com/Timetable.html
Click on 'Guide 4' for a PDF timetable of services (you'll need Acrobat Reader).
Scroll to page 24, where you will timetables for services 914, 915, 916 and 917 (same route, different numbers).
You can take the Jacobite steam train (as seen in 'Harry Potter' films) from Fort William to Mallaig:
http://www.westcoastrailways.co.uk/Jacobite.cfm
then the ferry:

Or you can get an oridinary train to Mallaig to get the ferry:

I was very happy with the place I stayed: the Royal Hotel in Portree.
http://www.royal-hotel-skye.com
It is situated near the main square where the buses stop, and its windows overlook the bay. We had choses half-board accommodation and the dinners were delicious. I hope the quality has remained the same, as it was 8 years ago.

Wow - Isn't Leics doing a great job! It is good to see VT still active - and good, honest, helpful advice.
Don't forget to look into the Glenelg ferry - magical - I know I keep going on about it but it is special - far more romantic and memorable than the bridge - just a tad difficult to do with public transport.

Best wishes from Orkney.

Glenelg, marvellous place. Camped on the beach there, absolutely superb, looking across the straits to Skye.
