Uyuni getting from puno to bolivia
Posted: Mon March 23, 2009 12:08 AM UTC
Hey everyone, looking for some advice on getting from peru to bolivia by bus. Im fine getting from cusco to puno, but need to get from puno into bolivia to do the salt flats tour - i think there are buses from puno to la paz but does anyone know if you can go directly from puno to uyuni? or do you need to go via la paz? its such a long bus ride.. also a little bit worried as a female solo traveller going to la paz.

thanks for your help! :)

Hi there,

From Puno you can take a bus to La Paz. I have a transportation tip on my Lake Titicaca page which outlines the bus information from the trip I took on this route. I don't believe it is possible to go direct from Puno to Uyuni.

From La Paz to Uyuni you have a few options. If you had the time there are interesting places you could visit on your way to Uyuni. I went to Sucre and Potosi for example. We took local buses between all these places and booked them through travel agents in each of the towns we were in.

I have found a webpage that outlines some direct buses from La Paz to Uyuni and also has information on the popular train option from Oruro to Uyuni (get to Oruro from La Paz by bus).

I am a female traveller also and although I did this trip with another female traveller neither of us felt threatened on our trip through Peru and Bolivia. I hope you enjoy it!

Cheers,
Rhianon

You will meet other travelers going your direction so don't fret too much about being alone. I also agree that if you have the time Sucre and Potosi are definitely worthy stops to break up that long journey. Legs of this journey can be done by taxi, mini bus and standard bus depending on your desired comfort level and budget. For example a taxi from Sucre to Potosi with a small group is worth the small amount more than it takes to get a bus or a mini van. Tourist only transport is available through many travel agents as well if you want to spend a bit more or you could even book your tour of the Salar from LaPaz which would likely include transport to Uyuni. After the trip you just ask to be let off in Uyuni or even in San Pedro de Atacama. You will find that most things are possible in Bolivia. They are very flexible, almost too flexible, when it comes to accommodating people traveling point to point.

Good luck and have a great trip –

Scott
