Buenos Aires Recommended "Home Base" in Buenos Aires
Posted: Sun March 22, 2009 06:56 AM UTC
As a follow up to an earlier question I posted, I am wondering what areas of Buenos Aires are recommended to rent an apartment in. I will be staying for a few weeks and am wondering which locations/areas in the city I should consider when selecting an apartment (close to shopping, restaurants, transportation, safe area of the city etc.) As they say, location location location! ;)

I stayed in Recoleta and really liked it. The area is save and close to everything (metro, buses, shopping - Avenida Santa Fe, bars, restaurants...). Palermo (especially Palermo Viejo) is also a very nice area to stay and stroll around.

Enjoy BsAs! It's a wonderful city!

If you want to be in a central area of the city then La Recoleta, Barrio Norte and the part of Palermo that adjoins them would be the most central. The Subte line D runs along Ave Santa Fe and makes getting to either the center or Palermo Viejo fairly easy. Taxis are still fairly cheap as well.

As a whole you will find Buenos Aires to be a very safe city. Just use the same precautions you would in visiting any large city in the the US or Europe. Pickpockets and watch/cell phone/jewelry snatchers are probably the worst types of crimes here. Since La Recoleta is one of the more affluent barrios you will see many more police on the streets here than you will see in Palermo Viejo/SoHo/Hollywood or San Telmo.

Hope this helps and be advised that not all rental agents are honest, not all apartments offered appear as they do on the agents website and for the most part avoid Craig's List, lots of scam rentals offered there.

Thank you both for the helpful replies, I will target those areas for sure. I will also be wary of what agency I book accommodation through - so far I have found these two websites:

http://www.bytargentina.com/
http://www.argentinahomes.com/

They seem okay (although I really have nothing to base that on!) but if anyone knows otherwise please let me know. Likewise, any other agency recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks again!

I booked through ByT Argentina and was quite satisfied with the service. Everything went perfectly well. I was in contact with the agent named Silvina. She was nice and did her best to please me.

Good luck!

Never heard of either one of those agents, seems new ones pop up every day some good some not so good. With all due respect to the other post, I would NEVER recommend ByT to anyone. Too many people I know have have had horrible experiences with them. Glad that someone had a good experience with them but would not count on that being the norm :)

Two agencies I would recommend would be Vacation Rentals Argentina

http://vacationrentalargentina.com/

and Reynolds Properties http://www.reynoldspropiedades.com/temporary_rentals/

Both are very reliable and apartments are as represented on their web sites, no nasty surprises when you arrive. In addition, they do not assist owners in scamming people by making up false damage or missing items claims in order to keep your deposit.

hey, i recommend taking a look at http://buenosaires.craigslist.org/ for apartments and http://www.livinginargentina.com/neighborhoods_and_attractions-sec318.html for a neighborhood breakdown. i'm partial to palermo (a young, chic vibe) and recoleta (classy and sophisticated). happy travels!

Thanks again to everyone here for all the helpful replies!

I am curious - I assume, as with other places, that you can save money by finding a place locally as opposed to booking over the Internet in advance - is this true for Buenos Aires as well?

If so, are there any recommendations on how best to go about finding a place once I arrive? My concerns would be finding a place that matches my exact time and location requirements all while trying to get used to the unfamiliar surroundings, language, etc. Although I think I could save some money by doing this, I don't know f it is worth the hassle and potential risk.

Thoughts?

As long as you are dealing with a reputable broker on line you will not have difficulty, with the tourist rental market a bit softer these days due to the decline in tourism you may be able to get a better deal on line or in person. Normally if you are renting for a month or more even in good times a 10% discount was pretty normal. With fewer bookings you may do better. In addition paying for several months up front also would garner additional savings, but again be certain who you are dealing with before spending any money.

There certainly is no harm in waiting until you arrive to check out apartments and strike a deal. I would recommend making contact prior to arrival with some of the agencies that have already been recommended and make appointments with them to view their offerings and tell them that you are dealing with several agents and will decide who is offering you the best deal for the best apartment.

Hope you have fun but agents in Buenos Aires can be tough business people so get your best Donald Trump on :)

torino1971 It is amazing that you just created a profile here (well sort of, since you did not complete any information about yourself) but have managed to make two postings recommending the same agency. You wouldn't be employed by them now would you?

You might have noticed then that they had asked almost two months ago. Your type of posting appears from time to time in this forum and it is pretty obvious your intentions. Especially when they are in response to old threads.

Thanks so much for your kind invitation but much too busy posting on travel blogs as opposed to being a fraud. Best wishes to you and I hope you can find a more suitable line of work. But then maybe this is the best you can find. Pity.
