Munich May 28th up to June 4th
Posted: Fri March 20, 2009 08:16 PM UTC
Hi,

I'll be traveling with 2 friends (girls too) to Munich between May 28th and June 4th after a three week internship in Dubai (UAE).

1° We would like to find an accommodation that could permit us to cook and that's not too far from the center or easily accessible by U-bahn or bus. An apartment would be our first pick. Any suggestions of places I could find an accommodation or a district to suggest?

2° I don't know for my friends, but for my part, I would like to meet VTers from Munich during my stay. Have a drink in the best Biergarten, to be guided around, etc. That would be very nice!

Any hints or suggestions are welcome! Thanks a lot.

Marie-Claude from Montreal, Canada.

Check out this website:
http://www.homeaway.com/
They are vacation apartments. They appear to be cheaper than hotels and are like living in a regular house or apartment. Therefore you could cook. There may be more sites like this and maybe someone else will chime in on them or experience with this one.

Another website with holiday apartments is fewo24, however all in German. I stayed in a small apt. in Starnberg, a lovely town 30 mins by s-bahn from the centre of Munich, too small for 3 but the same owner has built a block of luxury apts there and they are called Apartone. as in apart one. There are 2 bedroom apts available in these.
Just be aware that some advertised apts are up flights of stairs, I,m fairly certain the ones in S,berg have lifts. If it says EG in the ad, this means Erdgeschoss, ground floor.
The area south of Munich called Fuenfseenland has a lot of holiday accommodation. If you could find a German speaker and especially look at fewo24, you would definitely find something. The area is lovely, small towns easy to walk around, and lake cruises available, I loved my stays in Starnberg, very easy to find your way around, yet frequent trains into Munich if I wanted to go there.

If you use the Google search engine, just type "fewo24.de" in the Google search block. When the link(s) come up just click on "translate this page". The web site should then translate, at least partially, lol, to the language you have set on your keyboard. It does translate pretty thoroughly to English, at least on the homepage. Gary

Hi - I have used both www.vrbo.com and www.homeaway.com for rentals in various places including Europe (although not Munich). Happy Travels!

Don't wait too long before booking, as this is a Pentecost, which means many people have at least a few days off, also the school children in Southern Germany are on holiday.
I tried to book end of January for the time period and didn't get what I wanted because I was too late.

In fact, I think I'll be searching for a regular hostel or pension since we will be arriving very late in the night at the airport and leaving very early (flight at 7 am). Hostel should be easier to find. Any particular suggestions?

You might do a web search, entering something like "Munich Short Term Apartment Rentals". You will get hits. I have a link in my notes (somewhere, lol), which I'll try to find. For hostel information: www.tfthostels.com, is a search engine that combines several hostel web sites. The apartment link I mentioned previously: www.only-apartments.com/apartments-munich.html. I like the site because it has photos, location maps, and the specifics of the rental all listed. Gary

I entered your dates on the "only-apartments" web site, and they had vacancies at 6 apartments in various areas of Munich. If there is a school holiday during your stay, you might actually wish to be a bit away from all the congestion and noise. The Munich public transit web site: www.mvv-muenchen.de. You might do a web search for the "Munich City Tour Card". It could possibly save you a bit of money. If you will be doing day trips within Bavaria, (which for rail purposes includes Salzburg, Austria), you might wish to visit the German Rail Site for information on the Bavarian Laender Ticket: www.bahn.de/international/view/en/prices/germany/laender_ticket.shtml. The German Rail web address split awkwardly. "laender_tickets.shtml" is correct. Gary

Another web site with a few Munich listings: www.bandb-ring.de/p/rbavaria_oberbayern.htm. The r before Bavaria in the web address is supposed to be there. Gary
