"Place" to stay in June for 7 days for 2 people Posted: Fri March 20, 2009 03:22 PM UTC
Hey guys
I was wondering... Florida has these really neat houses to rent, so called vacation rentals for about 1000-1500 usd/week, i.e. http://www.floridaheindl.com/
I'm trying to find something similar for me and my GF in San Diego but all I'm googling are some 3000-4000 usd/week houses of far lesser comfort than the ones mentioned in florida; how come?
Assuming that I won't get any further in my quest with affordable house rentals in san diego I decided to switch my preferences:
Duration of visit: 7-9 days
No. of people: 2 (double bed, shower, kitchen would be nice too)
Max. price for 7 days (for 2): 1500 usd
Location: as the vacation rentals with pools or at the beach front don't seem to be an option, I'd prefer downtown (near gaslamp, little italy etc.).
Type of "place" in order of preference: house > condo > hotel/apartment > hostel
Yes, I know Hotel Coronado is relly nice but also too far away (we won't be driving with a car, buth rather with public transportation) and also not really affordable (-:
Thanks for all good recommendations (downtown would be really nice!).

Hi - I've had luck with www.vrbo.com and www.homeaway.com (although not in SD). You might want to check those out. Happy Travels!

There are two main problems with your request. First that you are coming to San Diego in June. This is summer season and besides the usual tourist trade, it is also time for college students to rent places at the beach. The other problem is that the areas near the Gaslamp Quarter or even Little Italy offer little in the way of lodging that you are looking for at the price you hope to pay.
I have suggested, on the Accommodations section of my San Diego page, a few of these type of rentals. You might take a look, as well as on my beach pages, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach where you might find a few options. I'm not sure of current prices, but worth checking out.
Also, Craigslist.com seems to work for many people. I haven't checked on the Old Town Cottages for some years, but when I did, they rented longer term--than by night and the price was reasonable and the little cottages, just a few blocks from the Old Town shopping and dining area, were pretty nice, including a yard or patio area with barbacue, table and chairs for outside dining.
Honestly, staying in a downtown location may be convenient for night time activity, restaurants and bars,(which are a bit more expensive in a general sense) but more convenient to the other sites of SD, so you will have to use the bus and Trolley to get around in any case.
The cottages at Crystal Pier, in Pacific Beach might be within your budget for the week. Last time I checked, it was.

"...but more convenient to the other sites of SD,...." Should read, "...but NOT more convenient to other sites of SD,...."

You can try this place:
http://www.sdbb.us/accommodations.html
It's a full suite with kitchen and in a fairly good location. We never ended up staying there, and opted for something else.

I too was going to rec. www.vrbo.com
Here is a place I stayed in San Diego. It is a great central location. $125 a night but you might get a discount for 7 nights.

Both Helen and Kathy have offered interesting options here. I haven't been to either of these places but know the general area. Both places are located in older residential sections of the city which are, in varying degrees, currently being "upgraded." The homes, in a general sense, are rather small, so might be best suited to serve as B&Bs.
Helen suggested a place on Bancroft Street. It is about four miles from the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter downtown and about a mile from the business area of North Park neighborhood. I think that there are no little coffeehouse, restaurant or bars nearer than a mile from this B&B.
Kathy suggested The Cottage. It is located in the "Hillcrest" Neighborhood, a little over three miles from the Gaslamp Quarter. It is about a half mile from Fifth Avenue & University Boulevard, which is the "heart" of Hillcrest's business section. Lots of restaurants and bars to choose from as well as some unique shopping. I do have a small Hillcrest page started. You might want to look at it to get a better feel for the area.
As for public transportation, you might check at http://www.transit.511sd.com/ or dial 511 to find out the route you'll need to get around from either of these places if you choose one of them.
