San Diego Where to stay in San Diego?

We are flying into San Diego in July for the start of a massive summer long road trip?

Where is the best place to stay in San Diego? We will have a car.

I like the Shelter Island/Point Loma Area, but there are several nice places around the area all are OK.

I've stayed at Hostel Cat, right near the baseball stadium. It's cheap, has secure parking, and within walking distance to some good nightlife.

Would definitely suggest you stay beachside. My suggestions would be Pacific Beach, Mission Beach or even up near La Jolla (since you will have a car).

The young college kids party at Mission Beach. San Diego State and UC San Diego are down there. There is alot of music in the San Diego area. Just pick up a free copy of the "Reader" at any grocery store and it will have all the nightlife in it.There are alot of hotels in "Hotel Circle" and lots of resorts on "Mission Bay". I would say stay by the water! Del Mar, Encinitas, Mission Bay. There is quite a bit of night life in Old town San Diego as well.
Humphrey's on the Bay is in the Point Loma /Shelter Island area. It's all good!

I vote for Mission Bay area. Good, intersting beaches, good people watching, reasonable places to grab a quick bite, near the yacht club.

Of course, it would depend upon your budget but, I'd say the best place to stay would be the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado or The Valencia Hotel in La Jolla.

If you have a more modest budget, I'd suggest the Ocean Beach Hotel, just across the street from the beach in Ocan Beach.

So, for better suggestions, tell us what your requirement, "...the best place...." means to you.
