Belize Travel from Cancun to Ambergris
Posted: Tue March 17, 2009 11:46 AM UTC
Hi there,

Im flying to Cancun and want to get to Ambergris directly. I know I can get buses from Cancun to Chetumal in Mexico and then Corozal in Belize before getting a boat. But does anyone know how I can find out about these buses and what times they go? Im travelling alone so would like to organise it as much as possible before I get there.

Also could anyone recommend a cheap, but quiet hotel in San Pedro?

Thanks a lot

It has been some time that I traveled that route, so my information is not up to date.

We went to the bus station in Cancun to investigate busses and buy tickets. The bus we took to Chetumal left quite early in the morning and we spent 10 dollars each. The trip to Chetumal took 6 hours and we decided to spend the night there as there were no busses to Belize city.

I only have found this website for bus transport in Yucatan and the fares seem very high to me.

In San Pedro look at the suggestions of the rough guide or lonely planet. They worked well for us. If in doubt we went into shops, bars or cafeterias and asked the people there. Worked great as well.

Hope this helps

At the Cancun airport go to the ADO Bus company desk. Get a bus transfer to the Cancun bus station. They can also tell you if ADO has availability to Chetumal and what it will cost. The other option is a shuttle to Playa del Carmen but those shuttles are limited in the evening and early morning. I don't know what time your flight comes in but we had a seamless transfer to Belize landing in Cancun at 8 p.m. then a 12:30 overnight bus to Chetumal. From Chetumal we got on a direct bus to Belize City that let off right at the water taxi for Caulker and Ambergis. This entire journey ended up being on ADO buses. We were sitting on the beach in Caulker having a beer at about noon – so about 16 hours later. There is another option. Once you cross into Belize you can get a flight to Ambergis from Corozal which shaves off a lot of time. Just ask the bus driver to stop at the road to the airstrip.

Tropic Air – http://www.tropicair.com/reservations/FlightSchedule.cfm

Ticket Bus for bus schedules – http://www.ticketbus.com.mx/wtbkd/

If you want more info let me know and I will dig out our budgets, etc.

I'd get an ADO bus from Cancun Airport direct to Playa del Carmen, and change there for a bus to Chetumal (we made the mistake of backtracking to Cancun and then had to miss two busses until seats were available to Chetumal).

Various busses cross from Chetumal to Corozal (check BelizeForum.com for various postings on up to date information) or you can arrange a private transfer with belizetransfers.com or similar.

Water taxi times from Corozal to Ambergris Caye are online at http://www.sanpedrowatertaxi.com/files/schedule.html.

Rubys in San Pedro has always been cheap but it might not be quiet.....But San Pedro is a quiet town usually.

I like the suggestion that you fly from Corozal to Ambergris-That'll save you from going to Belize City (Yuchy) and a long bumpy boatride

I caught a bus from cancun to chetumal once, got on in cancun at about 7am i think, ask for a seat near the front, they assign seats on your ticket, you dont want to get stuck near the back. but its an 8 hour, hot bus ride to chetumal ,if you miss the last bus out of chetumal and get stuck there, dont worry,, get a cab to the Hotel Ucon on Mahatma gandi ave.in chetumal it $20.us a night, clean safe, then get a cab in the morning to chetumal bus station, bus,s leave chetumal main bus terminal every hour all day, last bus is maybe 3pm, i think. there is absolutly nothing in corazal, you will probly get robbed. i would recomend either a short flight in corozal with "tropic air" [tropicair.com]to San Pedro, or the water taxi, last one to sam pedro i think may be around 3pm, maybe 4pm.
i would not nessasrly recomend san padro as your final destination just yet, its kind of a pricey tourest trap. its o.k. nothing special.
i would however recomend from chetumal a bus right to belize city, about 3 hours, from the main bus terminal in belize city, get a taxi $5.us. to the Belcove hotel[belcove.com] its a great place, very safe, very clean, rooms start at $26u.s. a night. I would suggest stay for two nights, on the very first morning, grab your towel, your stuff will be completely safe in your room, walk the 150ft to the main water taxi terminal, get a water taxi to caye caulker for a day, when you get there, walk straight to the split, ask around, not hard to find. a swimming hole [beach]with a bar, relax, unwind from your trip, have a beer, go for a swim, be carefull of some of the local beach boys who hang around the bars, some are very aggressive, dont let them touch you, keep you eye on your drink.
by the end of the first day, you will know where you want to go, if you like caye caulker, theres a hostel, decent place called tinas place, try a net search for that.
i will be at the belcove in Sept, any questions, please email at iamgordo@hotmail.com
have fun
