Beirut Nejmeh square closed?
Posted: Tue March 17, 2009 09:09 AM UTC
Hello,

I have been to Lebanon recently and it seems all the streets leading to Nejmeh square in Beirut are closed (all entrances blocked and guarded by soldiers who permit only some people inside and did not permit me). I wonder what are the reasons for this and is the square always closed?

Ever since the assassination of our X prime minister Hariri, the whole down town area was shut down, and many other assassinations took place in the country, and since Nejmeh square is where Parliment is located, extra measures have been taken for safety.

The square is only closed to pedestrains when Parliment is open, but on most days there are many cafes and shops right next to Parliment in Nejmeh Square and you can walk in and have a great lunch or hubbly bubbly and a drink of turksih cafe.

I was in Beirut for three months until february and could pass by the guards everytime I was there, sometimes they checked my bag but most of the times they didn't even check but just let me through. Lots of restaurants, cafes and shops there. The extra security is in regards to the parliament that's located there.
