Rotterdam Museum Week
Posted: Tue March 17, 2009 09:02 AM UTC
I am traveling to Rotterdam on April 4, 2009 which is Museum week! Never been to South Holland so I am looking forward to the trip. Since I arrive late on the 4th, I only have 1 day - Sunday April 5- for Museum week. Can someone recommend: If I can only see one museum on the 5th, which one should it be?

Thanks!

Hey there!

It is really hard to recommend one museum because I do not know your taste but.. Since you are in Rotterdam, the harbour city of Holland and because it is a really nice museum I can recommend the maritime museum. It is in the centre of Rotterdam and has several exhibitions, some change from time to time. You can get on board of there museum ship ´the buffel´ which lies next to the museum and I think the exhibition about the history of the Holland-America line is really interesting. This was a cruiseship that went from Rotterdam to the US and you still see a lot of pictures and info etc. about it throughout the city.

If you want to stay in style and have a nice dinner I recommend Hotel New York. It is a hotel located in the old office of the Holland - America line. A huge venue and they serve delicious food. You could also just go there for a drink or maybe you would even like to book your room there, going Rotterdam harbour style all the way! I ate there once and had coffee many times. It is really beautifull and has a great view over the canal and city all the way around.

Hope you have fun in Rotterdam!

To see the participating museums, go here:

and type "Rotterdam" for "plaatsnaam".

Keep in mind that the museums will be extra busy this weekend...Maybe you want to be there early...

Cheers

hi, I am a museum lover and know the museums in Rotterdam well.
In addition to the Maritime Museum, I suggest De Dubbelde Palmboom. A museum in the historical center of Delfshaven (Rotterdam).
A ticket to this museum also gives entrance to the Schielandhuis (which is at 5 minute walk from the Maritime museum).

Boijmans van Beuningen has excellent art exhibitions. The NAI (Dutch Achitecture Institute) is just across the road from Boijmans and includes a visit to one of the finest examples of Dutch art deco/modernistic villa's of which you can see photos on my Rotterdam page.

Arboretum Trompenburg is a park museum. It's a museum because the park houses one of Europe's finest collections of trees.

Not participating in the Museumweekend is my favourite museum: De Kunsthal (www.kunsthal.nl), across the park behind Boijmans.

Any other questions about Rotterdam I'd be happy to answer.
Enjoy!
