Try checking out www.virginblue.com.au and jetstar.com.au to check out budget fares for the dates you may want. Also, take note about the airports the planes will be leaving/arriving in Melbourne when choosing which airline to take.
If you want to be more adventurous and some time to spend, why not try the two-week backtracker pass where you get to travel from Melbourne to Brisbane and make as many stops as you want within the two week period. We did it last 2005 when I was still studying at the University of Queensland. We were able to get free return train tickets to Blue Mountains and to Bondi Beach. You also get a day tripper ticket which you can use for trains, buses and ferries around Sydney.
