Cancún Exit Duty
Posted: Sun March 15, 2009 09:26 PM UTC
We are arriving and departing Mexico via the Cancun airport. I have been searching for up to date information on the exit duty (or departure tax) and can only find general references. What is the current exit duty and should we be prepared to pay in pesos or do they expect US dollars from US citizens?

I've been to Mexico many times, most recently Dec 2008, and have never paid any kind of tax leaving the country. I've booked through package companies and I've booked my air separate. Although I've seen posts suggesting that Europeans need to pay upon exiting, I believe that at least for Americans that it is built into the airline ticket price.

I left Cancun last Tues, March 10 for the US and did not have to pay any duty.

I guess that might be why I could only find vague references.

Thanks so much for your responses.

Other posters are right.... and as for the currency you need to use to pay whatever expense comes up at the airport (ie. excess luggage, etc.), USD are very welcome but you can also pay in local currency, whatever suits you best. Cheers.

Hello !
Altough you should trust the helpfull and reliable miss Laura, I dare to add a little exception... As far as I understand, what is included in your flight ticket is a simple entry duty. In 2005, I had a return flight to and from Cancun. But when I left Mexico to visit Tikal in Guatemala, I had to pay a little fee. As far as I remember, they gave me a new tourist card I used when taking my return flight in Cancun. But, this may not apply to you.
Anyway, enjoy your travel in this nice country !

Just to follow up-
We did not have to pay an exit fee/duty. Just be sure not to lose your Tourist Card. On entry one official told us there would be a $56 U.S. fee for each lost card.
