6 hours in Cannes Posted: Fri March 13, 2009 12:13 AM UTC
Our cruise ship will be docking in Cannes for 6 hours and we would like to see it, Nice, Eze and Monte Carlo. Is that possible to do in that amount of time and would we be better off trying to do it on our own without a tour to save some money or is it more efficient to set up a tour? How much time should we alot for each town and in what order should we try to see them? Thanks!

I think you are being a bit optimistic thinking that you can do all of these places in six hours. The train to Monte Carlo from Cannes takes just over one hour. To Nice from Cannes is 40 mins. Eze can only be reached by bus, so I think you would be wise to forget about Eze this time. You could possibly go directly to Monte Carlo from Cannes and if youdon't spend too much time there, then you could have a quick stop at Nice on the way back. The trains run quite regularly. why not choose one and have a decent look? You will also probably enjoy a stroll around Cannes even if just to soak up the ambience.

With only 6 hours, I'd try the cruise ship tour if they offer one. You have about 114 km round trip. You can take the motorway for most of it but you still have to negotiate smaller roads for part of it. If you run into any delays, you may miss your ship and that's a big problem.
Why not just enjoy Cannes for a few hours? It's beautiful and there is enough to do to keep yourselves busy. Just eating lunch can take a couple hours. Plan on the other things for a future trip and just fly into Nice and enjoy the area. You can easily spend a week in Nice alone and there is so much to see in the surrounding area.
If you want to check the train schedules, go to http://www.sncf.com/
Again, if you run into delays, you may miss your ship. Try typing Cannes into the VT Search Window above and see what is offered. You could type the other places into the Window too. This might help you make your decision. I would not try all of these places in 6 hours. You won't see anything but the inside of a train station (or the motorway).
If I had to pick one of your suggestions, I'd choose Eze because you can take the train and have enough time to enjoy the village. Nice is a large city and can't be seen in a couple hours. It also has nasty traffic if you are in a hurry.
Good luck and whatever your choice, have a great trip. It's a gorgeous area.

Good save Maryimelda. I had no idea the train did not go to Eze. It looks like it does on my map. Thanks so much.
I really think they would have a wonderful 6 hours just staying in Cannes. I'd do it in a heartbeat! 8^)

Thanks so much for all your help! I think we will either just take the cruise ship tour or try to hit one city. I'd heard such good things about Eze that I hate to skip it. If you had your choice, would you see Monaco or Eze and Nice?

For safety sake, I agree with Sally. I would just enjoy a relaxing few hours in Cannes, but since you ask which of the others we would choose, then I would have to say Eze because it is the only one I have not yet been to. Nice is fabulous with lots to see and there's something about Monaco that I just love, although there are many who would tell you that Monaco is a waste of time. It all depends on what you like to see and do and we are all diffferent in our likes and dislikes. Study all the places (they are all well covered here on VT)and decide for yourself and as I always say, what you don't see this time, you can see next time- it works for me. Enjoy the Riviera!

Now I'm really confused. It seems the train does go to Eze. I was always told that you had to go by bus. Anyway it seems that it is a 13minute journey from Nice on the train.

cannes could occupy your limited time. eze is indeed beautiful but you will lose time getting to and from. perhaps antibes with the old city and excellent picasso museum in the castle would be easier and closer.

According to the sncf site, you can go to Eze by train. Be careful though, it looks as though it only goes to Eze-bord de mer, which is on the coast and still leaves you 2.5 kms on foot uphill or 9.5 kms with a vehicle. With a train ride of 55 mins plus the walk each way, you'd be better off, as the others have said by staying in Cannes for your time there.

6 hrs, to all those places ???, stay in Cannes ,you will have plenty to see.walk the blvd la Croisette, see the wonderful hotels lining it . A tour of the ile de Saint-honorat, might be enough time for you,they have cistercians monks living there now,historical monument of FRance. See the church of notre dame de l'esperance with a wonderful view of the sea, its at place de la castre; walk around place Gambetta for a local flavor of the town.
you will be back ::)

Thank you all so much for the advice. I've decided we'll just hang out in Cannes for the day. With the itinerary we've got for this cruise, we'll probably need a break from all the rushing anyway and it sounds like a great place to just stroll around and have a nice lunch. Thanks again!
