Durban Travelling around Durban Alone
Posted: Wed March 11, 2009 03:55 PM UTC
Hi, I am in Durban for 6 weeks. I have come alone from india officially. I want to see places like Durban city, Ushaka marine world, Drekensberg mountains, National parks, beaches etc. during the weekends. Are there any scheduled tours that allow single travelers? I dont want to take a cab and go alone as it would become expensive. Any help?

I don't know about tours, but you can certainly rent a car and do all of these things yourself, for much cheaper than a tour (or a taxi) would cost. I did that when I was in Durban for a weekend about a year ago. It cost something like USD 90 to rent a small car for two days. I drove all over the place, including the mountains. There are good maps available and things are easy to find. Parking is not a problem at all in Durban.

Mate, I agree - rent a vehicle and do it yourself. You can contact the official tourism agency in Durban (http://www.tourism-kzn.org/) and they'll be able to advise on scheduled tours if that's what you'd prefer.
Durban City is a dump nowadays and not much to see. The City Hall, Playhouse, Da Gama clock and Dick King Statue on Victoria Embankment is about the best there is. You can have a look at the harbour and the beachfront (especially from north pier) as well.
However, my advice would be to head out of Durban to the Drakensberg Mountains (as you've suggested), as well as Hluhluwe-Umfolozi and the Greater St Lucia Wetlands in northern Natal. Some lovely coastal towns and villages up and down the coast as well, for example Umhlanga Rocks, Ballito etc.
Hope you have a great time and stay safe!
