Is free Wifi readily available in the major towns and cities? Is it worth taking my lap top or is it better to go to internet cafes?

Certain guesthouses, hotels do provide free wifi access. I'm going to Siem Riep Tomorrow and the hotel I will be staying (Mandalay Inn) have Wifi access.

I agree! Was just in Phnom Penh and quite a few spots on the riverfront have free wifi (with ac), I used Riverside Bistro which had good food, ice cold beer and even kept my laptop plugged in the whole time.
Currently in Siem Reap and its the same, wifi in many spots. Many hotels and guesthouses also offer free wifi so check into that. For security purposes I use my own laptop but if thats not an issue and you don't wanna carry it then just use the cafes and pc's provided at hotels/guesthouses.
