Melbourne Accommodation on Great Ocean Drive
Posted: Tue March 10, 2009 03:57 PM UTC
Hi,
we're a family of two adults and two young children and will be travelling to Melbourne in April. Would like to know if anyone can recommend affordable accommodation with views of the apostles on the great ocean drive?

What else can we do in Melbourne with kids? thanks

Visit the Melbourne Mueseum,http://museumvictoria.com.au/melbournemuseum.

It caters to all ages, my niece and nephews never get bored of it, its been a favourite for many years so it caters for younger and older children. Its located very close to the city centre so you can either walk or catch a tram. You may also like to look at Scienceworks which is located just outside of the city on the way to the GOR.

Aside from Meggy's suggestion of Luna Park which is an old school amusement park, theres is heap of stuff around St Kilda that is really good for kids. My daughter has found a 'cool' playground called St Kilda Adventure Park, nestled amongst houses and apartment blocks, typcial Aussie suburbia. It has a flying fox, trampoline, live chickens wandering around, swings, slides, climbing things, a half pipe and most other things that are not in most childrens playgrounds today. There is even barbecue facilities (so you can bring some snags or burgers to cook) and tea and coffee for the adults (free but you can give a coin donation if you are the giving type). Its located off Neptune street which is off Grey Street in St Kilda. Best thing is, its free and the children will be occupied for hours :).
My children also like the Zoo or Healesville Sanctuary, furry animals is always a hit but it depends what they are 'into'. Have a look at my Melbourne page which is a work in proress but getting there.

Nearest place to stay near the Twelve Apostles is Port Campbell. I am not familiar with accommodation in that area but you should be able to search for some.

Sorry there is no accom close to the 12 Apostles. Port Campbell has been suggested and I'd like to suggest you might like to take a minimum of 2 nights/3 days to "do" the GOR. Stay first night in Apollo Bay, second in Port Campbell. You could consider flying into Melb via Melb Airport and then returning via Avalon Airport (15 km from Geelong) and that is a LOT closer to the GOR than Melb Airport.
