How long it takes to Cabo da Roca from Lisboa? Posted: Mon March 9, 2009 01:59 PM UTC
and is it wise for me to go there when I´m very afraid of highs? Is there places reached easily to see this point without going up?Or is it worth going up there,if I can´t go to edge? Some said at tips, that easier busroad goes from Cascais,if you don´t like narrow roads and hights. Is it still so?The tip was 6 years old,so if the bus-systems have changed, and take different roads.Where the bus leaves you?Near the lighthouse or more far away?I´m not sure should we vist here, that´s why I ask all this.We are going at June to July,so I´m only starting to figure out what trips we might do from Lisboa. We stay 10 nights there.

Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of Europe. And that's all, with a lighthouse. If "having been there" and the respective diploma are important to you, if you love wild cliffs by the sea, you may go, you don't have to climb anything, just to drive to the lighthouse. Being afraid of highs, maybe you'll find one thousand alternatives for a better use of you time in the area.

Many Options: Close to Cascais you have Boca do Inferno and Praia do Guincho. Close to Sintra, Praia da Adraga or Azenhas do Mar, to skip the popular Praia das Maçãs or Praia Grande.
In Estoril coast, and closer to Lisbon, Parede is famous - Some algae turn sunbathing in the rocks as a natural health care. A sanatorium was created in location, to use the curative effects of the seashore.
If you wish to travel a little further (and, in 10 days you must!), then Ericeira, or Arrábida are great places for sunbathing, as, even further, Nazaré and all the coast till S Pedro de Muel.
My suggestion for the best way to enjoy Portugal: get a car, pick only a few highlights to visit by day, and take your time in the way - stop here and there, enjoy the sun or the shade, meat the people out of tourist spots, eat in small restaurants asking for local specialities, and feel the real Portugal.
If you need any suggestion for a few day trips within this spirit, just ask.

We hate sunbathing..It´s most boring thing to do.We try to find seaside only because of the views, and would be nice if there is no sunbathing-people,because I take lots of photos, and I don´t want people in swimmingsuits on them ;)
But I´m sure that at those places you mentioned,we will find good places.
We make different kind of holliday-trips.Ones when we drive a lot,and ones when we stay more at smaller area, and this year for a change,we don´t want to rent a car(never say never, but we´d like this kind of trip this time). But we will visit some places nearby.People like so different things, that we must find out where we will find what we want to see.We like old castles-really old, those who no-one lives anymore, without furniture and so on.We don´t like so much palaces and glittering colorful castles. We have mostly loved mevieval castles. We will also stay in Porto,so we will see another big town.

Old castles?
Lisbon (why not!), and not far, Sintra, Sesimbra, Obidos (I love it), Leiria, Porto de Mós, Tomar (with the monastery).
Near Porto you have Guimarães, and Feira.
Most old castle stand close to the Spanish border, a little bit out of the way.
Good landscape may be found in the centre, with Arouce castle, near Lousã, in a very beautiful and remote spot.
YOUR castle, however, could be Almourol, in a small island od Tejo river, near Tomar.

I don't know if I "know" your tastes but
besides the good tips from Avelino (solopes) if you get a car you should include
-Cascais, Boca do Inferno, Praia do Guincho, Cabo da Roca, Praia da Adraga, Azenhas do Mar, in 1 day around Lisbon area
-A bit further (another day to the north) Ericeira, drive by the sea to Peniche, lagoon and Óbidos, including sea, cliffs and castle.
- another day south Sesimbra, Arrabida hills, Portinho da Arrábida beach (not for the beach but for the beauty of the place)
-if you want some "different" coast line go bit further south. Porto Covo region. Very nice place. In this case you can combine with Évora
Enjoy

We still think, that we try not to rent the car.We love driving around, but we have done it so much, that it would be nice sometimes be without. For example:it´s nice to sit down for a while, and have a glas of wine/beer,and we are very deeply against driving if taken even one glas.So if we would rent a car,it would be no this kind of things. Also my husband sometimes don´t feel as comfortable when driving strange car,and then he might juststear the road, and see"nothing" himself-sometimes even gets neck-ache.So we really try to plan using only train/bus.
And we have had coupple of stressing years-so first time ever,we are not going to make very tight timetable =) We even bought tickets to rock-consert one day.

I think you are beeing wise, and I know that driving in Portugal is not too easy to someone from the north of Europe. Maybe you may concentrate the "must go... must see" in a couple of "dry" days, using the car that may be very useful in that case, and spending the remaining days at ease.

We have driven from Finland to Italy, trough grazy roads on Poland and so on,but with our own car.It is somehow more relaxing..Even though I haven´t ben driving outside Finland. One reason is that I don´t want to,and another reason is,that my husband hates reading map-and I love it..I´m waiting to get a map of Porto in post, and I have to allready see maps from net because I can´t wait..My friend gave my Lisbon,Estoril and Cascais maps, but from Porto I ordered one.
