Yum yum yum
Well, who knows? Maybe we'll buy some lobster to take home. I doubt it though... we'd have to purchase on Sunday night, keep it in the hotel room that night and then fly it home... it wouldn't get cooked until Monday night... nah... probably not this trip. Maybe next trip though!

Re: Re: One night in Boston and... Posted: Wed November 12, 2003 08:08 PM UTC
I live in Boston. I would stay away from Durgin Park and the Quincy Market area because it's a major tourist mecca, beset by chain stores and high prices. Legal Seafoods is a chain but a good one, and the same goes for McCormick and Schmick which I think has a better seafood selection (many kinds of oysters) and a very nice bar. There's also a seafood restaurant in Chinatown called "Big Fish" which is one of the best Chinese restaurants I've ever been to. If I only had one Sunday I would probably just stroll around Beacon Hill, Chinatown, the North End and the Back Bay admiring architectural details, maybe visit the Museum of Fine Arts, and because I'm a freak I would attend 11:00 Mass at Church of the Advent for their amazing music and lavish medieval pageantry.

I work two jobs on Sunday, starting at 7:00 am and I'm good for nothing but keeling over at the end of the day. DW

Re: Re: One night in Boston and... Posted: Wed November 12, 2003 08:18 PM UTC
Now whatever happened to the Combat Zone?
I'm afraid the combat zone was legislated out of existence. I lament this, but I suppose it's better for the residents of Chinatown not to live in a morass of pimps and hookers and filthy bookshops. I think there may be one or two bookshops left, but home video killed off the theatres altogether. I do occaisionally still get propositioned by unsavory maidens in the general area but they're clearly drawn by its reputation rather than its reality.

Thank you for the great tips and warnings! While I'll probably skip the mass, I may very well go wandering about the neighborhoods you mentioned... that's RIGHT up my alley.
Thanks again! Jessica

Yes, they are predicting cold weather for this weekend, so bundle up!
Hmmm. What to do solo on a Sunday? I would do Beacon Hill and Charles Street (lots of cute shops & cafes), and then from there, follow the Freedom trail to the North End. It'll take you through Quincy Market so you you can stop in if you want, but like others have said, it's a tourist trap.
For dinner, it sounds like the Barking Crab would be exactly what you're looking for. It began as a summer-only seafood joint under a tent on the waterfront with a fabulous view of the downtown skyline. They've since taken over the permanent structure next door, so they're year-round now. The bar is very casual and friendly, with a great selection of beer, and there's a couch and some comfy chairs clustered around a wood stove that no doubt will be fired up this weekend. They've got a full dinner menu, including the mandatory lobster. Enjoy!

It's not that I want to be a wet blanket or anything, but I've had a bit of a funny feeling about the barking crab ever since it was found that their live seafood tanks were circulating sewage contaminated water from the filthy channel directly underneath the restaurant. Maybe they've cleaned up their act. Sorry.

Re: Re: One night in Boston and... Posted: Thu November 13, 2003 02:34 AM UTC
Yes a few years back they did have a problem with old sewage lines draining or leaking into the Fort Point Channel. Unfortunately, they were taking water from the Channel to circulate into the lobster holding tanks. As soon as the problem was discovered they were shut down, but they have long since fixed that. I've eaten there many a time with no issues.

Re: Re: One night in Boston and... Posted: Sat November 15, 2003 04:27 PM UTC
Today's about getting everything together and figuring out how I'll spend my day in Boston tomorrow.
Just looked up the reviews on Barking Crab and Boston Sail Loft on citysearch.com and... it looks like Barking Crab is maybe a little more touristy? It got some pretty horrible reviews, too... like it's gone downhill from an auspicious beginning? :-( Boston Sail Loft is sounding better, after reading those reviews.
I'm not in to the touristy thing tho... the least touristy, the best. :-)
Last minute suggestions for the 24 hour kamikaze run?
