We were hoping to fly to Maun from Joburg but it is over 8000 Rand rtn so we were considering the alternative of Joburg to Gabs and driving to Maun. We have 10 days in Bots and would like to spend most of it around Moremi so will need to rent out a 4x4 with camping gear. Do people think it is feasible to drive to Maun maybe with a day or two stopping off in the central Kalahari.

Also can anyone tell me if it is possible to rent a 4x4 and camping gear in Gabs.

Mate, cross into Botswana at Stockpoort (RSA) Parr’s Halt (Botswana). Hrs 0800-1800. You can then drive up to Maun, which is about 100km from Moremi. It's a long drive, but you can make it in a day. Refuel in Maun, purchase groceries and then drive to Moremi.
Consider a rooftop tent when you rent your 4WD. Works like a treat. Enjoy.
