Can anyone please advise on a good, guest friendly and mid-range hotel in Piazza area? Has anyone stayed in National hotel? Is it guest friendly? Or Taitu Hotel?

Taitu is a nightmare. Many rooms have no hot water and I was thrown out when a larger group showed up. National Hotel is closer to Meskal Square (called Aviout - ou as like the u in blue) locally. There are cheap hotels in the Piazza area rather than mid-range. Wutma is the choice cheap hotel in the area.

Taitu, National and Ghion are all run by the government. Frustration and 'lost' reservations are common.

Just returned from Addis and stayed only one night in the Piazza are.
Taitu hotel, Wutma and Baro Hotel are in the same street.
Wutma was recommended but full, Taitu was not recommended so we stayed in Baro
It's a lovely place around a nice courtyard but we, cheap backpackers, were disappointed : 95 Birr for a single (3/4 double bed) but no electricity and no window in the room. Perhaps they have better rooms.
And it was after a long flight with not much sleep
We even couldn't drink tea or coffee because no electricity.
I heard the Taitu was cheaper but better ?

Please see above. Taitu was over 100 Birr 2 years ago. Also you are not guranteed to be allowed to stay. They threw me out because a large group showed up unexpectedly. The hotel you stayed at has never gotten good reviews. In 2 years I have never ventured in as it always looked too dark. Now I know why!

There are a few other options like the Wanza off Bole rd. I can write you a tip if you wish.

You mean the cold water only in many rooms or the unhelpful staff?

I have just come back from Addis. You can read my page on Addis Ababa on VT. I did not like most hotels located in Piazza area including the famous Taitu. If ever I decide to go to Addis again, I will certainly and without any hesitation stay in hotels on Bole Road.
