Schloss Neuschwanstein Front view of the castle
Posted: Wed March 4, 2009 02:11 PM UTC
Do someone know how to reach the location from which one can get the panoramic view where you can see the front view of the castle (for example:http://www.panoramio.com/photo/10963977)? Is there a trail or is this view only accessible by air (helicopter or balloon)?

Yes, the view is by Air.

Neuschwenstein is one of the hardest places to get a photo of that represents the views often seen on calendars etc.

There is a small park on the right about 2 km before you get to the parking lots. Ask for Schwen See and see if you can find the park.

From there you can walk to a beautiful clearing where you can get a distant, telephoto picture but it is the back side.

I will post a photo from the clearing on my site today under Neuschwenstein

Usually the castles are very tall and therefore it is difficult get the height. But there are always mountains surrounding a castle and this mountain covers the height of the castle generally.A natural protection you can say...so get to the nearest peak and zoom as much possible.

You might check the net for a map of the European Walking Route 4,(E4),in that area. I believe that it may continue in that direction from the Marienbruecke. Gary

Standing at the waiting area for our tour of Neuschwanstein I took photos of some cable cars going up the mountain. I'm suspecting you could get spectacular photos from the cable cars if someone here will tell you where to get on them.

Just a thought. There are also some pretty decent views on the walk up to (or down from) the castle although not the whole-castle shots.

There is a "map" of the area around the castle at: www.romanticroad.com/neuschwanstein/sights.php. The E4 trail is shown to the east of the Marienbruecke. Apparently the cable cars would be the Tegel Bergbahn. I didn't have the slightest they were there. Gary

If you go to: www.tegelbergbahn.de/index.php?id=160, there is a picture showing a view over to the castle. Gary

The cable car is around at Waltenhofen and to far east to get a good view back to the castle.

When are you going to the area and do you have accominadations yet ?

thanks a lot, yes there seems to be a trail (E4) that would go there and a cable car (tegel bergbann) that would offer this view. Thanks for the map! I hope it will work (I should be in the area for Easter)

At the Tegel Bergbann they do hang gliding and para sailing. If you are adventurous you might purchase a doubles ride on a para sail and get the shot you want.

My favorite hotel in the area of Fussen is the Hotel Hirsch:

http://www.hotelhirsch.de/index.php?id=2&L=1

It is about 3k from the parking lot at Neuschwenstein.

Are you looking for great back road drives with beautiful scenery to photograph ?

I know of several and many sites to see in the area, if interested.

Yes, we saw the paragliders too. I have photos of both the cable cars and paragliders that I took in the waiting area just below Schloss Neuschwanstein. It looked like tremendous fun.

Greg, Option 1: Munchen (take red bus tour, hop on hop off).

Take the autobahn #95 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, hotel: http://www.accorhotels.com/hotel-directory/gb/europe/germany/garmish-partenkirchen/garmish-partenkirchen-hotel.htm Tour old part of town, Cog train with the cable car to the top of the Zugspitze, Germans tallest mountain, great experience and views for photos.

Take road #23 to Kloster Ettal, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ettal_Abbey It is about 20 minutes from Garmisch. The history and architecture is well worth the stop. Next, Oberammergau, 15 minutes up the road. Drive right into the center of town, I always get a parking space on the left side of the road.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oberammergau. Wood carving and the Passion Play.
Back track 5k to the road to Linderhof. Visit Linderhof and all that that entails. Get your tickets and time of your tour at the buildings before you walk to Linderhof, about 8 minutes away. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linderhof_Palace When finished and leaving Linderhof, turn RIGHT as you come out of the parking lot on the road you came in one. The will lead you thru a great back road drive thru the mountains and valleys, past Plansee to Reutte. It is a fast approaching sign, when you are at a under-crossing bridge, at Reutte, follow the signs to Fussen. This is about 1 1/2 hour drive so Judge your time accordingly. In Fussen, Hotel Hirsch, http://www.hotelhirsch.de/index.php?id=2&L=1 Tour the old part of town across the street and walk to the river and along the path back around to your left to the hotel.

Next day, Go early to Neuschwanstein. Park in the lot, get your tickets there and either take the horse drawn carriage or the bus to the top of the hill. It is a very steep and long hill which could impact the rest of your day, so walk back down, not necessarily up. Tour the castle. Take the road #17, The Romantic Road out of Fussen. Turn right at Steingaden, go 3k to Lauterback
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauterbach,_Baden-W%C3%BCrttemberg drive on the to #23, turn left and go to Rottenbuch, a must stop. Find the Kloster on your right as you enter the small town. Drive thru the arch and you are there. Follow the 23 and it will cross over back to the 17 in Schongau. It is easy, just follow the Romantische Strabe road signs. Continue on the 17 to Rothenburg about 2 1/2 hours away by country roads and autobahn. Hotel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauterbach,_Baden-W%C3%BCrttemberg It is inside the walls of the city and has a small parking garage, a must inside the walls.
take the evening walk around the town with the town crier at dusk. They meet in the town square, 2 block to your right as you walk out the door of the hotel.

Next day, tour the remainder of the town, see the Christmas shops, amazing places. Now you need to make a decision as to where you want to go to.

North and west or east to Herrenchiemsee.
