Sorrento SORRENTO TO ROME BY TRAIN
Posted: Wed March 4, 2009 03:51 AM UTC
Hi VTers,
We have a free day on this trip while in Sorrento. We would like to know if anyone thinks that a one day trip would be worthwhile to go by train from Sorrento to Rome?

Arriving at the Rome railway station how would you suggest we get around to see the major sights, ie. Spanish Steps, Piazza Navone, Trevi Fountain, etc? One of us has been to Rome before and mainly walked around to see the major sights, but since we don't know how far the railway station is from the major sights, what should we do??

We found out that the Circumvesuvania would take us from Sorrento to Naples in approximately 1 hour and then change to 'FS' getting next train to Rome.

How long would the train to Rome take and how much is the fare?

Thanks for your help..........

Depending on what train you take it is 1:21 or 2:00+ hours from Naples to Rome and costs approx 36Euro e/w. Google trenitalia. I think you have to change stations or platforms through an underground passageway in Naples which is something of a pickpocket haven.
In Rome, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navone, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon are all within a short walk of each other but a little bit away from the train station. Take the Metro A line for one stop for Trevi Fountain or two on the B line for the Colosseum and Forum.
Personally, I wouldn't take the trip from Sorrento unless I had already allowed time to see (in order), 1. Amafi Coast (Positano, Amalfi, Ravello); 2. Pompeii; 3. Capri. I'm not saying you shouldn't visit Rome - just that 1 day isin't enough.

I agree.

Having spent two lots of 4 days in Sorrento, and 3 lots of 4 days in Rome I have only scratched the surface of the both.

You will find that Rome has far, far more to offer than the very few sites you have listed. Have you no interest at all in seeing the Colosseum, the Forum, the Vatican, St Peter's Basilica, the Pantheon, Trajan'sMarkets, Santa Maria Maggiore, the catacombs, San Giovanni in Laterano, the myriad of other ancient churches...? I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Central Rome is extremely walkable (and has an excellent pblic transport system); one could easily spend a week there are not see everything worth seeing (and far longer for parts other than the immediate centre).

But if you really want to go to Sorrento (and I'm not sure it is worth a daytrip. It is an excellent base for exploring the Amalfi coast and the Pompeii arhaeological sites, but in itself it is really just a pleasant seaside town):

Train to Napoli Centrale goes from Termini station, which is around 20 minutes walk from the Colossseum but, obviously, has excellent bus, tram and Metro connections. www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html will give you train times, details and fares (click cart icon) in English. It does not hold data very far in advance, so just choose the same day (rather than date) when you search for information.

The Circumvesuiviana train leaves from Napoli Garibaldi/Centrale, where you will arrive (one level down). Trains are reasonably-priced and frequent and, as you note, journey time to Sorento is around an hour. Timetables on this link (they are not on the Trenitalia site):

http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en/Orari

Click the PDFtimetable link, then choose Napoli Garibaldifor allrelevant timetables.

Thanks for the answers and info. For your info one of us has been to Rome 2 times for many weeks and visited all the sights you mentioned plus more. The other person will be going to Italy for the first time now. I only gave examples of some of the major sights to try to see on this trip for the other person's sake.

Thank you for the train info in Rome and we will decide whether to go or not. We are going to be in Sorrento for 7 days and intend to visit Capri, Amalfi coast, Ravello, Naples, Pompeii, etc.

If you are going to be in Sorrento for 7 days then there is no point in going there for a daytrip.

I suggest you take a trip to Ostia Antica, Tivoli or Florence/Pisa instead.
