Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Tel Aviv-Yafo Appropriate clothing?
Posted: Tue March 3, 2009 10:00 PM UTC
I have searched the forums and can't find anything on dressing appropriately for the mosques, churches, etc. that our tour group will visit in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and other places in Israel. Is there a guideline for men and women? Is a calf-length skirt long enough? Should we plan on long sleeves or just when in the churches, etc?
(We leave in one week)
Thank you for any advice.

Rule of thumb for a trip to a mosque is that women should not show their ankles and should cover their head (scarf).
Pants and a long sleaved top should be ok for your visits (no shorts)

After visiting Mosques, synagogues and Churches all over Israel and Egypt, here's what I learned. Women: wear long slacks or a skirt to the knees (or lower). wear long sleeved clothing (you can layer clothes for comfort, but put the sleeved item on before you go in. Synagogues and mosques, women, cover your hair. take a shawl or scarf along with you to put over your hair. DO NOT wear Christian or Jewish style jewelry when going into a mosque. DO NOT carry abible when going into a synagogue or mosque.
men, wear long slacks and sleeves to the elbow are the shortest you can wear. Long sleeves are better. no crosses.
The key to all of this is to layer your clothes. wear a scarf around your neck for ease in slipping on, wear or carry a long sleeved blouse or jacket. Enjoy your trip. I'm jealous and I just got back in December!

Women definitely do *not* have to wear any head covering to visit a synagogue. However, modest dress as described above is expected. There is no requirement of men other than some sort of a head covering. You may even wear shorts if you wish, although it isn't common (I'm referring to weekdays as opposed to the Sabbath).

OTOH, churches will definitely not let men in with shorts.

Usually the heavy tourist religious sites offer a temporary "cover up solution" on the spot.

Don't need to cover your head in a synagogue. Don't know what I was thinking there! Sorry.
