In the large cities in Russia, there are certain streets that you have to use underground pedestrian crossings for--it's both illegal and physically impossible (or a death wish) to cross any other way. The main downtown street in Moscow, Tverskaya, has lots of these crossings, because it is something like 6-8 lanes wide and perennially choked with traffic. Look for signs with a picture of a little stylized staircase going down. Sometimes the metro entrance and the underground passageway are the same thing, but sometimes the steps just lead to an underground passage to the other side of the street.
