Nuremberg after work? Posted: Sun March 1, 2009 10:25 AM UTC
Hi,
I'll have to spend a week (Mar 7)in Nuremberg for work.
I will arrive on Sunday early afternoon. I plan to rush to quickly visit the castle: it already closes at 4pm! After that, I'll probably stroll around the old city, I've found a walking tour to print..
Now that should already give me a pretty good taste of the surroundings. Is there anything specific to do in the evenings?
Since I suspect not that much, beer and food will be what is left ;-)
I have already spotted a few place in the VT tips, a must seems to taste the Nurnberger in a a Bratwurst Hause(Barfüßer,Zur Goldenes Posthorn,...). Anything else I should absolutely taste?
I have also spotted two alternatives if I become fed up of German food ;-) : Mexican (Enchilada) and Indian (Sur Mandir)
Last question, is there anything specific running that week (starting March 7), most of the hotels were already full...
Thanks in advance for your help and any comment about my plans...

There is a big fair at the showgrounds in the week up to 8 March, named "Freizeit Touristik + Garten" (so tourism and garden, nearly the same words), so hotels should be less full and cheaper after that.
More info here:

When you are tired of Nürnberger Rostbratwürste you can also flee into Italian and Chinese restaurants, they are all over the place. No lack of foreign flavours. Sometimes it is harder to find a local restaurant in Germany than international cuisine.
If you do not want to drown in beer in the evenings you can check out concerts, shows, etc. in Nürnberg. This is a good website, just browse along:

Hi,
a friend of mine living in Nuremberg showed me two restaurants that I loved very much. The one was the Heilig Geist Spital restaurant with Frankonia cuisine. Very traditional German food. And an old restaurant. I loved meat with lebkuchen sauce. Little sweet, of course but very good! My friend he prefers "Schäuferle" with Knödel. Of course, with good beer... Directly in the city centre. www.heilig-geist-spital.de
The other restaurant was little bit far from the city but a good spot. A Greek restaurant but in modern style. Very small, and very good food. We had the Meze plate. www.eleon-online.de
I am not into nightlife. But my friend always says there's not too much going on. She prefers to go to Erlangen which is close by. About 20 minutes by train, I guess. A cute city, pretty historic and many students. There a nightlive spot is E-Werk, music, concert, etc. I do not know it in person but it is supposed to be good. www.e-werk.de.
Also I was in Bamberg one of these days, which also was very cute. The historic city centre is UNESCO world heritage. Should be about 40 minutes by train, I guess.

Thanks Sissi for the potential explanation. Concert could eventually do the trick but since I don't speak German, cinema, shows,... are a no-go!
Thanks Chris for suggesting a mini-trip to the places nearby!! Great idea if I don't finish too late and/or if the last train is not too early!
I had already spotted the Heilig Geist Spital, it is on my todo list as well ;-)
The lebkuchen sauce sounds like a must-taste!
One more question, what is the difference between Kloß and Knödel? I can't tell from Google image, both look the same!

Kloß and Knödel are the same - dumplings.
The word Kloß (plural: Klöße) is more used in the north and west of Germany, and interestingly enough in Frankonia (where Nürnberg is). Knödel (plural the same word; sing. ) is more used in the south.
However, there are many different kinds of Klöße and Knödel, made of potatoes, sour dough, meat, vegetables, stuffed, salty and sweet, etc. Some are cooked in water, others only steamed.
To add a new word, I could tell you that in the north and east of Germany they call Klöße made of meat also Klops... ;-)
You would always eat Klöße/Knödel with a lot of sauce.
The Klöße most common in the Nürnberg area are potato Klöße cooked in water.

Re: Nuremberg after work? Posted: Sat March 28, 2009 02:36 PM UTC
As a bit of a follow-up, two weeks I'm back from Nuernberg...
...as I was expecting, not that much to do in the evenings. Strolling around and taking pictures was barely an option due to the particularly 'nice' weather!
I had a (particularly heavy) dinner at the heilig-geist-spital but I haven't found any meat with lebkuchen sauce!
I used to finish work quite late so had no opportunity to make any evening-trip!
Anyway I'm coming back this week (!!). It was quite a late minute trip and booking a hotel was even more challenging (what's really going on in Nuremberg??). This time, I even have to stay in Erlangen for 2 nights, no more need to plan an evening trip. ;-)

The problem with finding accommodation could be due to the Easter market which goes until 13 April. No important fair and congress at the moment.

Reg. the missing Lebkuchen sauce. It is not a spring flavour, more of a Christmas flavour. Perhaps this is the reason why they did not have it on the menu.

Hm. I was there in January when I ate Lebkuchen sauce. But it might be the x-mas thing... Traditional German food is heavy - most of the time.
If you like students atmosphere you can check the Pleitegeier - a pub at Hauptstraße. They also have some food (I did not eat there but fair prizes). And there is a cute little street close the the Schlossplatz - Schiffstraße. There are many nice restaurant that I did not check yet - but they look very nice. I just was in the little wine bar right at the beginning. Nice place for an after-work wine. The street beginns behind the bakery which you find next to the castle (administration of the university). It has a good selection of cake for the sweet taste. Also there the is Sax restaurant (very popular - if you ask me kind of average modern style cafe, nothing special). I have some few tips on Erlangen, not the most, if you want to have a look.
Best Chris.
