Whisky-Tour in april Posted: Sun March 1, 2009 08:14 AM UTC
4 older Danes plan a Whisky-Tour in april
2 days in Edinburgh - 4 days on the road (rent a car) and 1 night in Edinburgh on our way back
3rd day go and stay in Inverness and from there explore Speyside (Whisky)
Any suggestion where to go, stay and eat on our Whisky-Tour
Expensive? We would really like to spent a night on a real castle - any suggestions?

My reply is the same as the reply I gave to the same question in July 2008, except I would substitute October for April. Viz:
If you Google "whisky tour" you'll find lots of sites. I suggest you go to www.maltwhiskytrail.com and www.scotlandwhisky.com/Whisky_tours and you can see the areas they cover. The latter website also has accommodation links. You might consider basing yourselves in Elgin or Rothes and doing day trips from there. You might consider taking the train to Aberdeen and renting a car there. Or perhaps joining a tour either from Aberdeen or Elgin. Youmight not want to drive if you are visiting the distilleries, plus the roads can be twisting and winding and driving from point to point will take much longer than you think. Remeber in October that it starts to get dark much earlier, so your day will be curtailed. The individual distilleries have websites which list all details regarding visits, admission charges and so on.
I would also add that Inverness does not have many, if any, distilleries nearby. You would do far better heading to Aberdeen, Elgin and so on. But you will see where the distilleries are if you go to one of the whisky trail sites.

www.maltwhiskytrail.com should help with some suggestions.
Can recommend the mustard seed restaurant in Inverness. When we were there a few years ago I had the best steak IŽve ever had in the UK.

If you go up as far as Nairn then i would definately recommend the Golf View Hotel, everything was absolutley perfect. I stayed there for a week on business and i couldn't have asked for more, helpful friendly staff, breath taking views, close to the golf if thats something like. It's such a beautful place, i honestly didn't want to come home.

Tks. Maybe we should take the train to Aberdeen and based in Elgin/Rothes. Again I will check tips from Hawkhead (post last year before our trip were cancelled)

Yes, better to take bus - megabus.com from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. 1/4 of the train price. Rent a car or take a bus to Elgin/Rothes. Agree?

If you're going to Inverness you MUST try dinner and whisky at THE ANDERSON in Fort Rose (20min drive from Inverness on the Black Isle).
They've won multiple awards from the Campaign for Real Ales and have a wonderful (and again, award-winning) whisky selection and dinner menu.
Another great place for whisky is FIDDLER'S in Drumnadrochit, right by Loch Ness. It's been named as one of Scotland's best whisky bars, and we were just there again last week... it's wonderful.

Wauv - great places. Thank you. Look forward to more suggestions. We go by bus or train to Aberdeen and the rent a car (maybe just explore the area by buses?)

For Inverness, there is great public transport within the city, and also a train station. However, if you want to explore the smaller villages of the Highlands you'll need a car.

Soon we go to Scotland. Thanks for all suggestions
We for sure go to FIDDLER'S in Drumnadrochit and explore whisky area around the city Elgin. A must is Loch Ness - nice place to stay?
We go by car from Edinburgh - convenient to visit all the small towns
Thank you
