Hawaii (Big Island) Kona and "Vog"
Posted: Sun March 1, 2009 12:54 AM UTC
I am planning a family trip for next Feb.(2010). I want to rent a house for 8 adults, 1 child. I want to be near a swimming beach. I heard that Kona is NOT the place to be because of the "vog" Is there another place on the Big Island that would meet my needs . Thanks for any information.

There really are not that many swimming beaches on the Big Island. The beaches tend to be rocky because of the things that cause the "Vog"

We do have fog in Kona. About 30 miles north of us the air is better and several nice hotels are located. The Hilton Waikoloa is nice having been spiffed up for the 3 weeks of "Wheel of Fortune." It has a large pool, gondolas, and tram are free. Small beach, but you can walk passed the Marriott to a nice public beach with shower and restrooms. The Marriott was completely refurbished last Fall and is very comfortable with a good beach. Shops and food courts are within walking distance.

Hello,
We just returned from the big island and the vog was not a problem at Kona. However, I understand it can change from day to day...we just went for it. Sorta like AR and FL weather, if you let it dictate what you do, you would never leave the house!! Have fun...I envy your trip!
