Schloss Neuschwanstein Neuschwanstein for the elderly
Posted: Fri February 27, 2009 05:58 AM UTC
Next month I will be taking my mother and aunt on a trip to Bavaria and I would like them to see Neuschwanstein because I remember how magical it was when I was there many years ago. I read that there are many steps to go up and although both are in good health, I'm not sure they could make the climb. Is there any way to avoid the steps on the tour?

There are tours for disabled and people with walkers that probably include a ride up the hill. I know there was a shuttle up the hill years ago. If i remember correctly there may also be a horse carriage available also.

I'm afraid i didn't pay much attention to the carriages and can't tell you if they operate all year. I found this site but, not a schedule.

The two castles are closed on the following so you should be okay at Easter.

Neuschwanstein Castle: January 01, December 24, December 25, December 31 and Shrove Tuesday

Hohenschwangau Castle: December 24

Here is a web site that gives you info about the carriage rides which are very inexpensive and lots of fun. http://www.hohenschwangau.de/557.0.html

When you take the carriage up to Neuschwanstein Castle, you are left off at a turnoff slightly below the castle and have to walk on up to it. Other modes of transport do the same thing. It is not a difficult walk and we (in our mid-60s) did not find the steps to be a problem at all. If they can walk a half mile comfortably, they should have no problems with any of it.

If this is a problem, consider visiting Hohenschwangau Castle instead. The carriage takes you directly to the castle and there are not nearly as many steps. The inside of Hohenschwangau is much more interesting that Neuschwanstein but the outsides are reversed with Newschwanstein being the "fairy tale" castle.
