I also need to get from Glasgow to Inverness... are there buses ? is that how it works. Im pretty freaked out as i will be travelling alone for part of the trip

Thanks

Hi, please don't panic. Glasgow is a lovely place these days. You will be able to get a bus or train to inverness from Glasgow. How much is your budget for the night ? www.travelodge.co.uk is worth looking at if you book early. Other websites which may be of help to you :
http://www.directrail.com/glasgow_inverness_train.html
http://www.citylink.co.uk/index.php
http://www.toandfromtheairport.com/glasgow.html

The first 2 will not allow you to search for buses or trains after May so you will need to search at a later date, have a great time in Scotland, Darren.

Here's the official Glasgow tourism website to check for other hotels or guest houses if travelodge isn't what you are looking for + of course it gives you a chance to see what the city is like.

Hi, thanks for the praise. You should be able to get something decent for that price which is approx £45. Advice is book early though if you want a travelodge . I have just checked August 2nd as i don't know what night you are staying & both central travelodges are available for £40 at the moment. As i said before have a lovely time.

No need to panic!

www.hostelworld.com and www.hostelbookers.com will provide you with alternative and cheaper accommodation.

As August is high season it would be sensible to book your accommodation in advance.

http://www.glasgowairport.com/portal/site/glasgow/menuitem.1f8c8b8c3a8f5fdc63f0ec109328c1a0/

will give you all transport options from the airport. I assume you mean Glasgow airport, and not Glasgow Prestwick? If you do mean the latter, then its transport options are here:

http://www.gpia.co.uk/AirportInfo/HowTo/links.asp

www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you train times, details and fares from Glasgow to Inverness.

www.nationalexpress.com will give you long-distance bus (coach) times and fares from Glasgow to Inverness. Coach is cheaper than train, but the journey is usually a bit longer.

There are two buses a day, and several trains, so it may be that you do nont actually have to stay in Glasgow overnight unless you want to, depending on when your flight lands.

I would recommend that you go by Citylink coach from Glasgow to Inverness. You may not be able to book a seat for August just now but if you keep looking at the site, August will become available in due course. There are often seats available for very little money e.g. £1 Glasgow to Edinburgh but don't know if there is anything similar on the Inverness route.

Trains to Inverness will go from Queen Street Station.

To go into Glasgow from Glasgow Airport, you can a)take a taxi b)take the public bus that leaves from outside, on the island opposite the arrivals door c)take the public bus into Paisley to Gilmour Street Station and then take the train into Glasgow, or d) take a taxi to Paisley Gilmour Street Station, and then take the train.

On reading your post, there is no mention of the airport, so it may be that you will be arriving by train from elsewhere. If so, then either Central station or Queen Street station is right in the centre of things.

You must pre-book your accommodation in Glasgow as August is a very busy time and if you don't, you may find that only the high end options are available. Try the Travelodge (make sure it's the city centre one), or Travel Inn or the youth hostels. The Scottish Youth hostel in Glasgow is located in a stunning terrace but is off the beaten path for a one night stay, with onward travel out of a train/bus station. There are various cheaper end hotels and B&Bs. Oh yes, theree's also Euro Inn, right behind Central Station. After you have found something that suits you, why not come back to VT and ask for opinions as to ease of access and so on.

You should also pre-book accommodation for Inverness, if required.

Dear Kitty,

You have already been given lots of very useful advice - so no need for me to write but there is always room for another welcoming message and virtual hug from a strange destination.

Have no worries - I am confident you will be delighted by the helpful locals, the ease of transport and the general willingness to help you.

Until then, you have us friendly natives to ask questions of. We are glad to be able to help. I reckon the planning is a big part of the fun of a trip so may the journey begin here.

Best wishes

Malcolm (still in Orkney)

You can of course fly to Inverness from Glasgow (GLA)!

Best hotel for a one stop is probably etap, £34 a night is about AU$75 I think.
It is only open a year or so so in pristine condition, 1-2 minutes walk from Springfield Quay with a 12 screen cinema and restaurants including the chains Frankie & Bennys and Harry Ramsdens Fish & Chips, also the unusual Indian Masala Jacks.......

Enjoy
