Inverness Open call for help.....
Posted: Wed February 25, 2009 06:38 AM UTC
Hey I just thought I would ask. I did this for a young Frenchman who came to visit Tennessee. I helped the young man with our language, customs, and locations in middle Tn. We became good friends and I look forward to his return. Would anyone be willing to meet with my daughter, a good friend of mine, and myself in July to possibly get some pointers on what to see and do in Inverness? We plan on kicking around Inverness for about two weeks starting on the 15th of July. We are going to stay in a hostel (student hotel, if possible) and just use it as a base of operations and sleeping location.

I'm particularly interested in the local customs and life. I'm a teacher and I have summers basically off. I have hopes that I can bring my wife back on a regular basis to visit so IF I can make some friends in Inverness that would be great. I am going to do my best to get to know the people in Inverness.

So anyway, it is late here, and early where you will read this. We would greatly appreciate it if someone would take the time to help some intrepid travelers.

I enjoyed Inverness and spent 5 days there using it as a base. I hope you plan to rent a car to get around and expect to drive between 30 and 90 minutes to get to locations. There are many historical places and and a lot of gorgeous scenery around that area.

Kathy thanks for the reply. We are indeed renting a car in Glasgow and driving up as part of our adventure! I will check out your page ASAP.

The distances are a bit deceiving - you may want to consider splitting your time and doing a week in another area. You might like the Dumfries/ Borders area. There is so much to see and do in Scotland that you will want to keep going back. I have traveled 8 weeks (over 4 different trips) and could still go back for more. If you are up for a very early start from Inverness you might want to take the ferry from John O'Groats (?) - anyway up north, and head to Orkney for the day. I spent two weeks in Orkney but you can see a lot in just one day. The people are so friendly - you will learn a lot in one day.

Hello from Orkney.

I am happy to help and if you make it this far north it'd be great to meet you.

Another thought - have a look at the http://www.couchsurfing.com website - we are members of this and find it a great way to meet (and sometimes stay with) locals. Many will be able to meet in town for a coffee or take you to see local music at hootenanny http://www.hootananny.co.uk/index2.htm

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Malcolm

Malcolm and Kathy I apologize for not responding quicker, I didn't receive any notification of your replies.

Going to Orkney is definitely happening! We are going to explore as much as possible, and kick back as much as possible. I'm sort of a casual explorer. My wife on the other hand (isn't going on this trip) is hardcore, up at dawn go go go. LOL

Honestly I have some stupid romantic notion of making friends in the area and returning periodically to visit and kick back. Much of our life is dictated like everyone else's. Budget, and we are both teachers so there will never be much of a budget. The moral of this long and boring story is we have to be as economical as possible.

Malcolm, I'll check out the website you mentioned. That sounds very interesting. I would indeed like to meet up and buy you lunch and a pint or two! Any time I can meet someone that is willing to share some of their knowledge of the area and life locally I will.
