Mittenwald Best Transporation Route from Munich Airport to Mittenwald Train station
Posted: Tue February 24, 2009 04:35 PM UTC
How do we get from Munich Airport to Mittenwald Train station? What are the steps we need to take? And how long will it take? I'm trying to figure out what time we will arrive at Mittenwald Trainstation. Our flight arrives in Munich on Saturday, Apr 11th at 7:50 AM. Thank-you for any advise.

http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

is an excellent and easy to use site for all German train times, details and fares, in English.

The journey takes about 2h 40min from the airport and you will have to change once (at München-Pasing). One-way standard fare is 26.10 euro.

Clicking on 'show details for all' will even tell you which platform the train will be at. It's very easy indeed. You can easily buy your tickets at the station, either from the ticket office or from machines (which will most probably have English language options. there is no need to buy them online in advance although you may if you choose, through the bahn.de site.

'Flughafen' is airport.

'Bahnhof' is railway station.

'Hauptbahnhof' is the main railway station.

http://uk.babelfish.yahoo.com/ is an excellent online translator.

http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/ is an excellent online German-English dictionary.

You will find that many Germans speak excellent English. Most speak at least some English and your language problems will thus be minimal. However, it is sensible to take a small phrasebook/dictionary with you. I find the Berlitz series (small and affordable) to be perfectly sufficient.

At the Munich airport ask direction or follow the signs to the train station which is down stairs.

Take the train to the main train station in Munchen, Hauptbahnhof, go up to the main floor of the train station and go to any ticket agent booth. I would not try the ticket machines, it will confuse you.

The ticket agent will tell you next next train time and the track it will be on. The train will probably be out on tracks 29 to 32 to your far right when facing the tracks, the ticket agent will direct you. It is an easy process and the trip passes thru some beautiful country side, lakes (See's) and towns.

I believe that you are one, maybe two stops past Garmisch. I have never had to change in Passau, but depending on the train.

Stop imagining things. It will be fine! German trains are excellent.

There will be places to put luggage: overhead, between seats and/or at the end of each carriage.

It will be perfectly ok, honest! :-)

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: MUC
To: Mittenwald

Keep the defaults, i.e. first entry of the drop down lists.

You can use the Bavaria Ticket for this trip. EUR 28,00 if bought from ticket machines (for all of you together). They can be switched to English. They also accept credit cards. Or go to the ticket counter (than it will be EUR 30,00). You have to buy the Bavaria Ticket already at the airport, not as mentioned at Munich (in German: München) Hbf (main railway station).

It should work out that you can make the connection with departure at 08:42 from Munich Airport. You'll have to change trains at München-Pasing. Has at least the advantage that this station is a lot smaller than the Hbf.
If you can make it on an earlier train at the airport (every 10-20 minutes) use this one and wait at Hbf or Pasing (thus having more time for change of trains).

> I'M IMAGINING THE TRAIN BEING CROWED & NOWHERE TO PUT THE LUGGAGE.
At Saturday morning? Very unlikely.
The first train starts at the airport, thus you'll have free choice. The 2nd train starts at Hbf. The main flow on a Saturday morning will be however into the city, not out of it.

The following link has a diagram and timetable of the Munich public transit system. For your travel, you could use the S8 from the airport (flughafen) to the Pasing station. The trip takes roughly 50 minutes. The train from Pasing will take you directly to Mittenwald. My main concern for you is that the Easter holiday is celebrated from April 10, possibly through until the 13th, in many parts of Germany. Mittenwald is quite small. You need to make sure that all the restaurants, etc, are not going to be closed. The trains in that area will likely also be much less frequent as they should be operating on a holiday schedule. Garmisch will probably be a bit more active as it is a resort town. Gary

Saturday,11th April is the Saturday before Easter. Since Good Friday is a public holiday, most people will already have left for the long weekend. The train won't be too crowded, don't worry.
The stores will be crowded though, as they'll be closed on Monday.
