Hi there

I'm planning to travel to Cambodia in early May and am hoping to head for Laos after visiting Angkor. Unfortunately I am only in the region for two weeks and would like to get from Siem Reap to Vientiane as quickly as possible. Does anyone know if there are flights operating between the two destinations? The last I heard - Siem Reap Airways was grounded & they were the only airline operating out of Siem Reap. Is this the case or are there any other airlines flying directly to Vientiane?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :o)

there are flights operating on that route.
lao airlines has a route going vientiane-pakse-siem reap and back the same way.
i took that flight back in november myself and that was very fine.

Your other option is to fly Lao Airlines or Vietnam Airlines directly to Luang Prabang which is a 'better' or more interesting destination given your short time frame. Then take the VIP bus down to Vientiane for a bus to Bangkok or crossover to Nong Khai where you can take a sleeper train to BKK.

i would like to add here that their service is really good.
it's quite rare these days to get free drinks and snacks on short haul flights, but you get it with lao airlines.

Great! Thanks seagypsy... always good to have another option. I'm hoping to head on to Louang Prabang from Vientiane, via Vang Viang, but may do it the other way around.

the luang prapbang to vientiane road has improved a lot in recent years and is now very fine to drive.
a few years ago it was in a very bad condition and not always safe, but that has changed now and it's a fine road.

Sounds perfect. One more question Claus. Is it advisable to book the ticket in advance if you have an idea of when you want to fly... or is it quite easy to book & get on a flight once in Siem Reap? My only concern is not being able to get on a flight if they book up quickly. Thanks.

they were fully booked when i travelled in november, but that is also high season.
may should be a bit easier.
i found that the flights were booked out with tour groups doing round trips in laos and cambodia when i was there, but these trips are mostly during the winter months, so i guess may should be ok.
just be aware that there are not that many flights a week on that route.

Thanks again Claus! I may try & book it as soon as I arrive in Phnom Pehn then. Do you know if there are daily flights? I see you've spent quite a bit of time in the region will have to take a look at your pages :o)

i don't think the flights are every day, but i'm not totally sure about it.
i think it's something like 2 or 3 times a week the fly that route.
