Why do the same hotel rates differ place to place? Posted: Sun February 22, 2009 01:18 PM UTC
Hi
I looked up Montrara Happy House on a few sites looking for rates
I found that Montrara's website quotes THB2300 for the room for 3 nights
Then I look at hotels2thailand and they quote THB1850 foor the same room for 3 nights
Is there some kind of catch? Why does each site have differing prices? If I book through a site like hotels2thailand can I trust I will have my booking done?
Thanks
matt

Yeah, rates differ considerably. This is because it depends a great deal as to what web sites, tourist sites and operators can negotiate. They all negotiate different rates, obviously, some are better than thers. For the most part, the rate you see on the web are pretty good, look for tax, VAT and other fees attached to the rates you are checking out. I like the ones that tell you up front what the rates are, "inclusive" of what the fees are, but are few and far. Researching rates and places to stay takes time so be patient and keep searching. The time you spend researching normally pays off, and if nothing else you'll feel a bit more confident about going on your trip. Never feel bad about hearing someone else paying less than what you are paying, which often happens. With the web the way it is, you can't always find "the" cheapest, but usually it is with in only a couple of $$.
I should also mention that season depends gretaly on what you'll pay as well, high season versus low season.
Have fun

Thanks bulldog,
So if I book through one of these sites, I can generally trust my booking will be done efficiently?
I'm very nervous to give my credit card details to a site I don't know I can trust

Some of this depends on your credit card also. Should you have problems with the transaction you should be able to stop payment by calling your credit card. Also, if the transaction has already gone through then your CC should have things in place to deny payment, and or recoup your funds already paid out, or not hold that against you in anyway. A sign of a good CC. Sometimes a call to your CC to just inquire and ask some "what if" questions is a good idea prior to booking.
Next, make sure that you have read everything that the web site puts out pertaining to fees. There are sometimes all kinds of fees that can get attached to your rate that you see posted such as VAT, taxes, booking fees etc...Sometimes you wont see these fees until you have gone all the way through the booking process, up to the last step. If that happens and you don't like what you see then just back out and usually nothing has happened. I avoid these sites whenever I can.
Another thing to look out for is, once a reservation has been made and you have to cancel, be aware of the cancellation policies. OR, something has gone wrong with the reservation, not the room you asked for, overbooked, problems with the room, etc... and you decide to go to another place, what happens to your refund that you should be able to get back. We booked at the Baan Krating in Khao Lak, changed room three times due to bad AC, leaking AC in another and something else before I decided to just go to another place. Not to mention the manager of this place was really BAD! Fortunately I got a full refund, but have heard of others that have waited for months to get their refund if they get it back at all. More and more sites have "guest comments" on them, not that you can always trust them, but it does give you a better idea as to how the web sites handle a variety of problems and guest satisfaction ratings.
The key is using a web site that explains things along with their fees up front and using a CC that you can rely on in a variety of scenarios.
Good luck
