Andorra Montpelier, France to Barcelona, Spain via Andorra
Posted: Sat February 21, 2009 08:07 AM UTC
I will be in the Montpelier region of southern France during the 3rd week of March and will be driving to Barcelona. I am in no hurry to drive to Barcelona except that it has to be done in one day - whether it takes 4 hours or 14 hours. We are 2 drivers and are thinking of driving via the Pyrenees and Andorra. According to Google Maps, this trip is approximately 550km and 7 hours long (net driving time). Is the scenery and/or other things worth this major detour? I would especially like to hear from anyone who has actually driven this route.

Of course, I know that the weather can be nasty at that time of year, making the trip virtually impossible (snowstorms, icy roads) or not worthwhile (fog) and, if I do decide to go, I will check the latest weather forecasts before I start off. If I can't make the trip because of the weather, I will just drive directly via the coastal road.

I thank you all very much.

Ive driven around Andorra and enjoyed - via Montserrat as well - I use the Michelin maps - or any other good maps - that show the scenic routes in green and that way pick roads and routes that are particularly recommended.

so you could try investing in a good road map that does highlight recommended driving routes for scenery.

Ive driven a lot of Europe this way and had some fabulous years of seeing not just the must see tourist spots but fab landscapes and off the beaten track back roads.

Thank you for your reply.
I too have the Michelin maps for Catalunya and Andorra as well as for southern France to the Spanish border and Andorra. The entire road in Andorra from the French border (Pas de la Casa) - except the part in the capital Andorra la Vella - is marked in green as a scenic route. Also, the road continues to be marked as scenic well into Spain, to Berga (except for the Cadi Tunnel, of course). So theoretically, the detour should be worthwhile - assuming the weather is relatively clear.

I've driven from Toulouse to Barcelona on this road in Spring and, many years ago, in the depths of winter. It is indeed very scenic - I just hope they've improved the railings on some of those bends since I was there! I'm still here and driving though, and I'd love to do it again, so I'd definitely say go for it!
