Brisbane Information on Brisbane
Posted: Fri February 20, 2009 06:55 PM UTC
In the mid 1950's I was in Brisbane aboard the USS Brush DD 745 along with three other distroyers of the Little Beaver Sqd. We were docked somewhere on the Brisbane river but I dont remember where. If anyone on this site is old enough to remember back to when we were there and at which dock we were tied up at, I would like to hear from you with the location info of the dock area. I will be visiting Brisbane later this year and like to revisit this area.
Thanks.

Hi Buddyv, I live in Brisbane, but was not around in the 1950's. There are a few places theses ships could have docked (New Farm Wharfs, Teneriffe Wharfs etc) but I believe nearly all large ships docked at Bretts wharf along the Brisbane River, at that time. Bretts wharf is at Hamilton, which is now one of the most expensive suburbs of Brisbane. Houses on Hamilton hill are very expensive (River and City Views) - millions of dollars. Hamilton is almost the inner-city these day. It is very easy to get to. In fact if you are staying at one of the big hotels in the city, you can travel right pass it on your way from the airport. Have a look at this website it may bring back memories, www.northshorehamilton.com.au. Hope I have helped in some way. Bye

I'm pretty sure lou is correct. I'm old enough to remember visiting US ships docked at the Hamilton wharves in the 50's. Some of those wharves are still being used (by visiting navy ships) and I visited the "Endeavour" replica there last year in September. A New Zealand war ship was berthed behind her.
You will be able to visit the area and have a beer at Dockside, a new commercial/ residential/ port facility. You could get there from Brisbane CBD via the City Cat which is a worthwhile experience in itself. http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/BCC:BASE::pc=PC_1231
If you get off the Cat at Brett’s Wharf, you can walk downstream to the Dockside area along the river front…plenty of eating out opportunities in the area for lunch or dinner.
While in Brisbane, A visit to Southbank is essential and you may be interested to visit the world's only surviving River Class Frigate HMAS DIAMANTINA in dry dock at the nearby Maritime Museum http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/ae2c2/1cabc3/4/ . Please enjoy your return to the River City.

Correction to the above posting: delete "Dockside" insert "Portside". http://www.portsidewharf.com.au/#home
