San Diego Rockin Baja
Posted: Thu February 19, 2009 08:49 PM UTC
I came across this - http://www.rockinbaja.com/
Is this famous in San Diego?

Would like to know whether the baja buckets are really good and how much is it for a decent lunch / dinner for 2 pax.

Any feedback welcome - in terms of locations / food quality / atmosphere.

Thanks!

They're a San Diego based chain. They had them in Arizona as well briefly.
I wouldn't call them famous.
They were reviewed while they were still open in Tucson: http://www.tucsonweekly.com/gbase/Chow/Content?oid=100062

Not necessarily, as stated they are a small chain with a good name.

If you are coming to San Diego, across from the convention center there is a small restaurant call the Tin Fish. Really good food for a small take out restaurant.

Not that great. Better choice for lunch would be the Tin Fish down by the convention center.

Sorry, was speed reading. Loved the Tin Fish for lunch. We stayed at the Hilton next door and the food at the bar was excellent, better for dinner there as the TF would be better for lunch.

I loved Tin Fish too :-) They had kind of odd hours though, as mentioned might be better for lunch than dinner. And if you have a car, you might also check out Point Loma seafood, I think it would be too difficult to get to without a car.

Everyone Thanks!

I guess I will skip that, but please let me know all the good places for food. I should be in attractions like seaword / zoo during lunch time, but welcome suggestions for dinner.

Dabs, I should be renting a car, pls let me know more about the seafood place you mentioned. Thanks =)

I look up The Tin Fish, looks good! Am planning to have one of my dinner there. Can someone let me know what's highly recommended? Also what is the average price for a decent dinner for 2 pax? I should be staying near Seaworld so hope it is not too far off.

Looking forward for my San Diego trip! =)

I have links for the websites for both places on my San Diego restaurant tips, you might want to take a look at the websites for both places for directions and opening hours, Tin Fish might not be open for dinner, the hours were a little odd from what I remember.

Point Loma was a fair distance from the downtown area, I hit it coming back from the Cabrillo National Monument.

Rockin' Baja Lobster in Old Town is lots of fun and the food has always been good when I've gone there. It offers Mexican style seafood as well as regular Mexican meals. It's a friendly and festive place for an evening's night out.

The Tin Fish, in my opinion, was not nearly as nice or as festive., Nor does it offer as much in the way of dishes to choose from. It is located near the ball park and is over-shadowed by tall buildings, nothing much in the way of a view.

If it is seafood you want, I'd suggest Anthony's Fishette for lunch. At least you could sit outside with a view of the bay to enjoy your meal.

The Fish Market restaurant is pretty good and also right on the bay next to the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.

My absolute favorite is the San Diego Pier Cafe in Seaport Village. It's deck dining is well sheltered and on stilts in the bay and the dining rooms are cozy, especially in inclement weather. The food is very good and the prices are comparable.

I have many more suggestions on my San Diego page which may give you some more ideas.

I haven't eaten at Rockin Baja so I can't comment on that, but I thought the food was very good at Tin Fish. It's very casual, I ate outside on the patio and there was constantly a line so folks obviously like it. It is near the convention center which I think accounts for the odd hours, they seem to be a more lunch type of place than dinner. I wouldn't describe it as festive, the only festive place we ate at was in Old Town, Casa Guadalajara. It was VERY busy and very loud, I wasn't feeling well the night we ate there so I don't really want to comment on the food but it was extremely popular place to eat.

>>>in Old Town, Casa Guadalajara. It was VERY busy and very loud,...I don't really want to comment on the food but it was extremely popular place to eat.

Hi Kristi, I suspect that the popularity of the Tin Fish and Casa Guadalajara has more to do with the fact that they are both conveniently located along the tourist's path. They both are good enough but many people want to know about different places or places that are equally visited by locals, so it is with that in mind that I made my suggestions.

Though Anthony's is highly populated with tourists, the "locals" love it too. I like Anthony's "Fishette" for take-away or eating out on the deck, but prefer The Fish Market for dining inside, rather than Anthony's, so I suggest both.

As for Casa Guadalajara, I do like the Rockin' Baja Lobster more, as it does offer authentic Mexican style seafood, which I like very much and the attitude and service is friendlier than I've experienced at Casa Guadalajara.

In Old Town, the best Mexican Restaurant was Casa de Pico. It out did Casa Guadalajara by miles and was full of locals who would stand in the long line waiting for a table. Unfortunately Casa de Pico had to move to another location and I don't usually recommend it only because reaching that location would not be so easy for tourists. Even though it's no longer in the tourist's path the lines are just as long.

BTW tracyskf, you didn't mention originally that you'd be staying near SeaWorld, which is in Mission Bay. There are lots of hotels that advertise as being "near SeaWorld" but they are in various other areas, so I don't know exactly where you'll be.

However, if you are staying in the Mission Bay area, I'd also suggest, for a casual lunch with good food and great views, the Sportsmen's Seafood Restaurant.

Unless you are going downtown for some other reason then I wouldn't bother just for a place to eat as there are plenty of great places to eat all over San Diego without the drive. No, way would I do it if there is a game or something going on at the ball park. The Tin Fish is a nice pick for lunch the Calamri Burrito was excellent. Unless you are going to Seaport Village to shop or walk the waterfront I wouldn't bother just for food.

However, one exception would be to catch the Broadway ferry over to Coronado Island and walk The Landing. Then eat at either Il Fornaio or Peohe's. The ferry gives you a cheap, but short, San Diego Bay cruise and food at either place is excellent.
