Re: drug tourism Posted: Wed February 18, 2009 01:36 PM UTC
shouldn't think so
there is the relaxed attitude on drugs in Amsterdam but there is also ordinary tourism ( anne Frank and all that) and then there is the "Red Light Area" which i suppose attract a few people
it depends on the "tourist" i would say
if you are thinking of going there check out a few Amsterdam pages on here for ideas

hahaha! Well, it might be for 19-year-olds who don't know any better (which describes some of my former students who went to Amsterdam for that reason), but, in fact, there is plenty to see in Amsterdam that has nothing to do with drugs. World class museums, canals, pretty streets, international cuisine, and yes, the red light district (that's about sex, not drugs ;-) ).
Actually, going to the red light district during the day is almost enough to turn you off of sex...let's say that in some of the windows, they have the "B" team out during the day...:-0
It's true that the area around the train station is kind of ratty, but the rest of the city center is well worth walking through...

Only for some.
I went there to see the canals, the Rijksmuseum, and the Anne Frank House.

I do not what the exact ratio is, but at least 50% of the visitors are "traditional" tourist (looking for Tulips, Cheese, Windmills, Clogs, canals and the famous museums).
The other "half" is less traditional and will party, do a Pub crawl (hen-parties), look for XXX-rated at the RLD OR try a drug (from mushroom to canabis and beyond).
And then there are the occasional (one or twice a year) soccer hoolicans.
You can have a good time at Amsterdam with just common street sense.

I saw a documentary about Amsterdam on CNN they introduced it as a drugs and sex city, probably that's why you ask this question.
it's sad Amsterdam get this kind of introduction, cause it has so much to offer, like Anna Frank museum, historical museum, Rijksmuseum, filmmuseum etc.
Beautiful squares, take a boattrip along the canals you will love that.
In fact I am going there with my family next week.

It would indeed be interesting to know why Shelw is asking the question.
I suppose the answer would be Yes IF one would want to do certain drugs without much repercussion. But drugs are available all over Europe and certainly Amsterdam is not the only city. Just note that all drugs are illegal in The Netherlands. Some of them, like using weed, are condoned but certainly not legal.

No, Amsterdam is a city with unique architecture and interesting layout, fine people, a rich and diverse history and culture and a wealth of tourist attactions. No matter how many times I visit there is never enough time to enjoy all it has to offer.

What are your plans when you hit the streets of our beautiful city? ;)
You can buy drugs everywhere, in every city and in every country, we are just very open when it comes to the sex and drugs industry.
I sure hope our tourist are as open minded as we are and that they are able to look further than our (great) freedom of almost everything).
The Dutch (yes, all of us) have a very rich, powerful and colourful history. A lot of that can be found in Amsterdam (but also in Utrecht, Haarlem, Leiden, Den Haag etc)
Our museums, small streets, houses and boathouses are filled with our history and sometimes even the history of our tourists!
I do recommend to check out our red light district, not just for tourism but to see the downside of our freedom; most women don't work there for fun.
I sure hope you enjoy your stay in our great city of Amsterdam.

"Of course, and we all walk on wooden shoes:-) "
I wondered what all that clacking noise was ;-)
Actually, everyone in Amsterdam seems to ride a bicycle (a good place for it) and says bad words in Dutch to the poor tourists who stand in the bike lane, because where we come from, the bike lane (if any) is down on the street level while in Amsterdam, it's up on the sidewalk level...we're very sorry, Amsterdammers...and just what does "#$#!*&%&&%^!!!" mean in Dutch, anyway? ;-)

You're right. Some Dutch and Amsterdammers can swear to touristcyclists.
I have to admit that we are not a thing better, riding through red, not giving a sign where to go etc.
