Housing for three weeks in Seoul during summer 2009 Posted: Tue February 17, 2009 03:12 PM UTC
Hallo!
I will participate in a language program at Yonsei University in August of this year. I am not very happy with their housing options. That is why I want to organize housing on my own. I am looking for a room in a shared flat or something similar. I am used to shared flats and I would prefer to live with someone of my age (I am 29). It should be at a convenient location to Yonsei and central Seoul. ANy suggestions? How much would it cost? In Tokyo I used the services of an agency named Sakura House who organises rooms for foreigners. Is there maybe something similar in Seoul?
Thanks!

Do not compare living in Tokyo to living in Seoul. May I ask what housing options are they offering you? I attended 2 different Yonsei Language programs and the last time I stayed in the international dorm which afforded me the opportunity to interact with other foreign students and make the most out of my time there. The dorm is nice, but it does have a communal bath and shower. Are they offering you the option of staying in a "hasuk" which is where a lot of students live. They are like little apartments/bed and breakfast that provide 2 meals a day and laundry in some cases. The cost vary by services, but they are usually about $500 US per month for the room.

You also might be interested in living in a "goshiwan". They are a little cheaper and you may have some older non-students living in them.

Anyway, there are a lot of living options that will depend on your budget. Yonsei is located in the Shinchon area which is home to two major universities so there won't be that many people you age except instructors. Don't worry too much about the age thing. I was 42 the last time a attended Yonsei. By the way, the nightlife is great in Shinchon.

Hi, may I just add my question to this one (it is similar, just another timeframe ;)). I'm also looking at housing options for 4 weeks in April. My bf is staying at the international doorm, but I won't be allowed to stay there with him, so we need another option where the two of us can stay together for a month (he will need another housing option by that time anyway). He's doing the lion's share of research, but I try to contribute a bit, too - so if you have any tipps, let me know! Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your answer. We now decided to stay in a hostel together - most of them give good discounts for a longer stay, so the price is still alright. I know about the high deposits you have to pay for an appartemnt, so I that wouldn't have been an option for us for a short stay. But thanks!
