holiday value Posted: Tue February 17, 2009 05:35 AM UTC
would i be correct in this theory. i am an australian who is planning a trip this year to mexico city. being that the australian dollar is so weak compared to the american dollar would i be correct to assume that i would save on a trip to mexico based on the fact that most things are quite cheaper in mexico. ie accommodation, car rental, dining etc. so what i would lose on the exchange rate would pick up on the costs of above, is there anyone who can give me an idea whether my theory is correct
thanking you henry

Hmmm.....this question is not very clear to me, but I think it really depends on what you want to do and where you are going to stay and what you are going to eat in Mexico City..the prices there range from very affordable to exorbitant.
On the other hand, if you go to USA, you will also find a lot of good deals behind the exorbitant prices...actually there are more deals and bargains now in USA because of the recession, so this might be the nice time to visit...
So, rather than worrying about the $, I suggest just doing the research and go where your heart really wants you to go...Hope this helps, and Greetings from Arizona, Norman :)

Henry generally speaking your australian dollars will go a long way in Mexico, i have family there and visit often.
now how much you are going to save depends on your habits, and only you can tell that.
as previous poster said well, you can have very expensive places in Mexico city too.like i said, on a one to one similar accomm, car rental, dining you will save in Mexico.

Agree with the other 2 posters..... if you're so concerned about losing $$$ when transferring from one currency to the other (ie buy american dollars, then come to Mexico and buy Mexican pesos with your USD's), I suggest that you bring very few or no USD and use an ATM instead to withdraw mexican pesos, there are like 100000 at the airport and then your bank will only have to make the conversion from AUD to MXP without losing anything in the middle and without you having to buy USD's. Even if your bank charges you a commission for each withdrawal, I think this is the best way to save money and lose as little as possible in the exchange. Mexican ATMs let you withdraw a maximum of $5,000 pesos (about AUD $500) per day, so that should be more than enough to cover your expenses. I suggest that you make only one big withdrawal and then keep your money on a money belt under your clothes at all times until you use it up instead of making many little withdrawals, cuz you will be charged with a commission each time you do. Also, try to use ATMs only within the airport or inside shopping centers or supermarkets, not the ones at banks on any street because those are more exposed and thus are less safe. Just a suggestion... cheers.

Laura has it accurately, you are in your head trying to do 2 conversions... Mexico can be much more economical than the USA for a trip-vacation, but its not necessarily true anymore - if it ever was - that everything is cheaper in Mexico. In the 1970´s and 1980´s it was quite cheap for foreigners to travel here, many things remain inexpensive - rents & tacos - but many things cost as much or more than US - phone bills MORE, electronics MUCH MORE, clothes MORE. So you have to define your niche, your plans and then those on this forum will help you better - suerte!
