Ayurin, I could join you for dinner on the 27th or 28th. Do you have a particular place or cuisine type in mind? I'm open to anything!

Hello,Maurizio and Robert(rmdw)!!
Thank you,Maurizio :-)
I have posted my vt meeting invitation in the meeting calendar.
Thank you,Robert!
We would love to meet you :-)
We have to leave Hawaii on Feb 28th afternoon,
so dinner on Feb 27th Friday evening is convenient for us :-)
This is our first visit to Hawaii... so to be honest we haven't decided where, what to eat...
How about eating in downtown Waikiki? It seems convenient.
Do you know a nice restaurant which serves local foods?
Thanks!

Ayurin,
On the 27th my presence clearly depends on the successful arrival of my flight. If I'm delayed, I wont' be able to make it.
By "local foods" do you mean Hawaiian? I'm not aware of any such restaurants in Waikiki but stand to be corrected.
I'll tell you what, since you'll be there a few days before me, why don't you & your mom figure out where you would like to have dinner on the 27th. Then let me know via e-mail by the 26th, set a time - like 7:00pm - 8:00pm - and then I will absolutely join you if I make it there on time.

Hi,Robert!
OK :-) I and my mother will figure out where to eat.
One of my VT friend was living in Hawaii, so I will ask him.
About food, yes I meant Hawaiian food.
I have no idea... Hawaii is a part of the United States...
so local food is almost same as in the United States???
By the way, I will write to you my hotel telephone number.
See you soon!

Ayurin
That is great that you and your Mom are coming to Honolulu !! Very Cool!!!
Does Hiro have to work in Japan during that vacation ???
I saw that you and Robert were talking about local Hawaiian food.. There is a small cafe across from the Convention Center ( a few blocks from the beginning of Waikiki ) that serves Hawaiian food..
Also there is a cool Japanese place to eat that has some Subarashi Tabemono !!!! That is a little farther away ..but not TOO far from Waikiki..
Keep me posted on your plans ..also check out my tips on Honolulu...I have a lot of pictures TOO !!! LOL !!!! I think it would be fun meeting whoever is there for the VT meet : ))))

Aloha Eli!
Here are the plans we have at the moment. I'm tentatively arriving around 5pm on Friday, Feb. 27th. I'm renting a car and then driving into Waikiki, where my mom is just finishing up her month long visit there.
Ayurin and I have set a time of 7:30pm to get together for dinner. I've checked with my mom and she's in too. Perhaps we'll find some others along the way.
I've left it to Ayurin to decide where we should go for dinner that night. There are lots of possibilities. And because I'll have a car, we have much more flexibility.
All things considered, he should decide by the evening of the 26th where we'll be eating so that all know.
Hope you can make it too!

Joining us will be my 88 year old friend from Chicago, Toni. She is one of THE funniest people you'll ever meet.
Ayurin, do scout out some of the places we've discussed and decide where you'd like to eat.

Hi,Robert! Thank you for writing our meeting information in “meetings & events” section. I subscribed there!
And your mother Clara and Toni will join us! Wow,I’m looking forward to seeing them.
Hi,Eli! I’m very happy to know you can join us!
Haha, you are right…my husband Hiro has to work while I am travlling… poor Hiro :-(
Let me introduce ourselves… I (Ayurin.. wife of Hiro) and Ayurin’s mother will visit Hawaii. (From Feb 25 till 28)
About where to eat, I’d like to eat Hawaiian food.
Thanks, Robert...Ono Hawaiian food restaurant looks very nice (http://www.geocities.com/napavalley/9874/)
But unfortunately it says it closes at 20:00.(too early for our meeting)
I will try to eat there before our meeting day.
So I would like to eat at the small café that Eli has mentioned in the forum.
Eli,will you please let me know its name and address?
You said it is near from the convention center… so it is near from the Hilton?
I will send you two an email to tell you my hotel telephone number and my mobile phone number :-)
Thank you very much! I and my mother are really looking forward to seeing you!!
Can’t wait!

Incidentally, when you do go check out Ono Hawaiian Foods, you'll also pass by the famous Rainbow Drive-In. Here are some reviews from my friend, Andy: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/92419/bc8e7/2
The Rainbow Drive-In looks like a traditional American drive-in restaurant but the food there is far above "fast food". Plus, they have some interesting offerings that you would never normally get at a regular drive-in. Highly recommended!

Hi
Everyone
I went by the Hungry Hawaiian cafe and found out that they will be closed for awhile..SORRY!
It seems the less expensive Hawaiian food places close early in the day..
The KAPAHULU POI SHOP is one that serves All sorts of great Hawaiian foods..but closes at 5 PM and I think they are closed on Sunday ...
3110 Winam Avenue
Honolulu, HI 96816
(Honolulu / Waialae Area)
Tel. (808) 737-8014
Hawaiian food made the old-fashioned way. Combination plates of pork or chicken, comforting bowls of squid luau
There are some places in Waikiki with local foods but NOT all Ono Hawaiian Foods..
There are a few more places that are GREAT !! Tell me if you want me to check them out??
Also I will check and see if the Rainbow Drive Inn is still around ..

I'm still leaving it up to Ayuri to decide where to go. Perhaps after a few days of seeking Hawaiian food, she'll want to go somewhere else?
Some of my favourite places from times past include:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/goma-tei-ramen-restaurant-honolulu
http://www.pagodahotel.com/Content.aspx?path=/Dining/PagodaFloatingRestaurant
The aformentioned Rainbow Drive-In
And many others.
Just let us all know by the evening of Feb 26th, Ayuri!!

Hi!
Sorry for my late reply.
Thank you very much, Robert and Eli, for looking for the place to eat together :-)
I have made up my mind.... let's eat at "Pagoda Floating Restaurant"!
I had been looking for Hawaiian restaurants...
But they seem to be closed early in the evening.
So I and my mother will try on other days.
I read Robert's posting and visited Pagoda Floating Restaurant website.
Their menu includes Japanese foods...wow it must be interesting to eat our food in foreign country.
Eli, is it OK?
About meeting place, how about meeting at the restaurant?
By the way, I have written down the names of the restaurants that you mentioned.
It helps us a lot choose where to eat :-)
Thank you and see you sooooon!!

I'm okay with the Pagoda too. Eli?
7:30pm I presume.
Just say the word and I'll get my mom to make a reservation there.
Also, I can give you and your mom a ride from your hotel to the restaurant, Ayuri.

Hi everyone
The Pagoda on Rycroft ? two blocks from Ala Moana Shopping Center ?? Sounds great to me ..... : ) Ayurin ..the Japanese food here isn't as good as it is in Japan ..??? But I am not sure of food at the Pagoda ..maybe it will be OK ?? Jimbo's Japanese restaurant on King St is Totemo Oishi !!!! BUT it too closes at 2:45 in the afternoon each day .. Way too early ..Huh??

Re: VT Meeting in Waikiki? Posted: Sat February 21, 2009 10:18 PM UTC
Yesterday I was talking with a Japanese friend of mine about whether she thought Ayuri would want to eat Japanese food in Hawaii. My guess would be not but my friend disagreed. Just so you know, the best sushi that *I* have ever had in my life was here: http://www.sanseihawaii.com
I'm sure it doesn't compare to what's available in Nippon but it's pretty darn good.
Eli, Ayuri: One reason I like the Pagoda is because my friend joining us from Chicago, Toni, isn't much of an "adventurous" eater. So it's not clear to me that she would enjoy typical Japanese food.
I have been to the Pagoda back in 1993 and enjoyed it very much.
I'm going to get my mom to make a reservation there for 7:30pm for 6 people under my first name.

Hello,Robert and Eli!
I'm so excited...my Hawaii trip is coming soon!
Let's eat at Pagoda Floating restaurant.
Their Japanese food might be different from Japanese food in Japan, but it must be interesting to eat Hawaiian Japanese food :-)
I hope Toni doesn't mind eating there...
Robert, please make reservation for us. Thank you! Please say "Thank you" to your mom!
Robert, thank you very much for your kindness (taking us from the hotel to Pagoda on your car)
But,I'm sorry to tell you we will go to the restaurant by ourselves.
In the daytime, we will be doing the sights of Honolulu. So I think we will go to the restaurant directly from the place where we are.
Thanks for your kindness!
Eli, I think the Pagoda floating restaurant is in the Pagoda hotel and it seems to be near from the Ala Moana shopping center.
So,let's confirm our meeting
DATE: February 27th Friday
TIME:19:30 (7:30 pm)
PLACE: Pagoda Floating Restaurant
http://www.pagodahotel.com/Content.aspx?path=/MapLocationDirections
See you soon!
