Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Faroe Islands slightly different question about Faroe - Shetland route
Posted: Fri February 13, 2009 02:25 PM UTC
Hallo, folks! (and forgive me for some kind of duplicating previous question)

As fas as I know, currently Faroe islands do not have any air or sea links with Shetland. I wrote to Shetland tourism authorities about this, the reply was negative, indeed they do not have these links.

However, maybe there are, i.e., private yachts (or boats) who +/- regularly cross the sea with passengers in that particular route? Or any small local planes? Any ideas appreciated.

I'm planning my trip to Faroes and would gladly include Shetland, too, if it would be possible to avoid time and money consuming transit from Faroe to Shetland via UK (or anybody else's) mainland.

There seems to be the possibility to use Freight ferries that travel between Torshaven (Faroer) and Lerwick (Shetland). I haven't looked up the details but here is the website.

smyril line connects a lot of the island in the north atlantic and i know that they used to have passenger transport to from thorshavn to lerwick, but i don't know if it's still running that route.

are you sure james.
from what i know the home base of smyril is thorshavn, but i might be wrong here.
it's purely from working in a travel agency i know them and not from sailing them.

The smyril website doesn't include Shetland for the 2009 schedule. If I recall correctly, the Shetland council is taking legal action against Smyril. Shetland invested millions in Smyril to ensure the future of the service and Smyril withdrew after it got the cash.

Shame about (or should that be on) Smyril Line - we were booked to go on it Lerwick-Torshavn in 2005, but due to weather conditions the boat missed out Shetland.

So we had to go via Aberdeen (overnight ferry south then flight to Faroes) which was a shame as wed hoped to get to Faroe without flying. Looking at Atlantic Airways website even that doesnt seem to be an option, though.

Be interested to know if you do find a way of doing it, as getting to Faroe without flying still interests us.

Dave
