New York City Accomodation

Hello, when I go away I like to rent apartments as opposed to hotels. Can anyone tell me any good, reliable websites that do short-term holiday rentals. Thanks in advance. Also I wouldn't mind staying in Brooklyn, any particular parts to avoid. Cheers.

Short term apt. rentals are common elsewhere, but in NYC they're mostly illegal. You'll find lots of listings on sites like craigslist though. There are also sites like VRBO that offer listings, but they do not vet the listings. Be beware, there's no way to tell what's real and what's a scam. The best thing to do is never, ever send money in advance (and don't be fooled into thinking you're safe with paypal).

If you want to stay on the cheap, either stay at a hostel, or the YMCA.

Thanks for your response, it's not so much that I wanna do things on the cheap, its just I dont like being confined to a hotel room and you feel like more of a local, and I don't trust hostels. I found this site, have you come across it before, www.apartments-in-new-york.com. With regards to the money i'm from a big city and you'd have to work extremely hard to con me out of my money. Thanks for your help.

Maybe a place like Mont Morris B&B would be right up your street...
