a trivial question - Bergamo to Verona! Posted: Tue February 10, 2009 08:18 AM UTC
Hi everyone!
I am coming to Italy for the first time and arriving at Bergamo aeroport.
I have to go to Verona and I know there's a train through Rovato.
My question is, are there special rates fro students and what are the regular fairs? I didn't find it on the net.
I will have 3 hours in Bergamo, what could I see?
Thank you!!
Anna

Well, the high town of Bergamo is a good place where to spend your time... even i i don't understand why you have 3 hours..
Anyway, from the airport, shuttle bus to Bergamo. From there, train to Verona (http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=3fdbe14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD)
But there is no direct train, and you have to change in Brescia. So, it could be easier to take a shuttle bus to Brescia, but they are few (see the Orio Al Serio Bergamo site for timetables)
Where are you from, Anna? You don't say it in your profile.. and that could help to help you... Are you entitled of a discount fare? It may depend..
Anyway, search a train (put in a date closer than 60 days), choose you trains solution an click buy to have a regular fare: they are quite reasonable.
Ciao
Francesco

Trains for Brescia or Rovato (both are given as connections by Trenitalia to Verona) leave about once an hour...except for a 3 hour window in the morning from 09:07 to 12:07...perhaps this is the 3 hours that Anna is talking about - that she are arriving in Bergamo about 9:00 a.m. and can't see a train leaving until noon.
Anna, were you looking at the www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html site that Francesco referred to? If you look at www.raileurope.com or other websites, it doesn't show all trains, so I want to make sure that you are looking at the best website.
As for special fares, Italy has just about the cheapest rail fares in Western Europe anyway, so in compensation, it doesn't have a lot of discounts...and the discounts that there are, are for Italian residents only.
For example, if you take a train solution that consists of two regional trains which connect in Rovato, the 2nd class one way is only 6.75 euro...hardly worth looking for a discount off of this fare. Note that different trip solutions will have different fares, based on the type of trains that are used - the faster trains are more expensive.
Take Francesco's advice and plan your trip in Trenitalia for the same day of the week as your expected itinerary in the next week or so (certainly within 60 days, after which point the schedules become unreliable), and you should be able to see pricing by clicking on the shopping cart icon (under "Buy"). You won't actually have to buy anything, but you will get to see pricing. Look at the transportation Tips on my Italy page for tips on how to use the Trenitalia website.
Ciao', Francesco! Ti porti bene?
Bill

Bergamo is worth a visit and as effeti says a ride up the funiculare to the Citta Alta is the pick, but maybe Bergamo could be done justice another time? You may be better served by getting the shuttle from Bergamo to Verona Brescia and the city centre from there - check out
