Sliema transport Posted: Tue February 10, 2009 01:29 AM UTC
We are staying at the Waterfront in Sliema from March 10.
Can anyone recommend any bars/pubs/restaurants nearby here, especially were footy is shown? Is it feasable to walk to St Julians/Paceville from here and how long would it take? Is there a late night bus from/to Sliema, or how much would a taxi cost?
Thanks for your anticipated help.

Re: Sliema transport Posted: Tue February 10, 2009 05:50 AM UTC
The last time I was in Malta was 2004 so I don't know if things have changed much. However I had been going every year since 2000 whilst working on our yacht at Gzira which is before Sliema so got to know my way around Malta very well. Firstly, there a plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafes within walking distance from where you will be staying where one can sit and have either a meal or just a quiet drink and watch the football, which is very popular in Malta. 'Pebbles' is one I recall. The Preluna Hotel (a short bus ride through Sliema) is also a good quality hotel for meals and viewing football on large screens. Secondly, it is quite a trek by foot to St Julians/Paceville so it is cheaper to catch a bus. Taxis are available but can be expensive, especially if they get caught in the evening weekend traffic heading towards St Julians/Paceville. Be aware though that the buses can be very, very crowded early afternoon when the young ones are heading to Sliema to go swimming. Same applies on a Saturday evening. Don't miss out on seeing 'Popeye Village' at Bugibba. Also a lot to see on the island of Gozo. Also recommend the markets at Valetta in the mornings every day and the huge one every Sunday morning. Have a great time. KoalaB

There are more than enough bars/pubs/restaurants nearby to choke a small dog.
If by 'footy' you mean Football/soccer, then I am sure half of them would have FOX.
Walking to St Julians/Paceville would be good exercise for close to 45 minutes but for 45 Euro cents you could take the bus.
Unsure about buses from/to Sliema, but there will be buses to at least midnight.
Taxi cost depends on traffic, of which there is plenty. Cheap they are not!

Hi My Auntys flat was just behind the Waterfront we walked to St Juliens but it is a few miles if you have a map you can go to Triq Manwel dimech (it is the shortest route) that road takes you to Balluta bay then you can go further round to St Juliens if you are feeling fit. Sliema has loads of restaurants and pubs.
Buses to st Juliens arn't far from the Waterfront and the stop for Valletta is just over the road.
If you want to ask anything else feel free to ask, Ian
Taxis are quite expencive make sure if you use one to barter a price so you know what you have to pay.

If you're staying at the Waterfront, then yes, there are quite a few pubs in the vicinity since Sliema is a tourist destination. Football is quite popular here, and most pubs have big screens which almost always show football matches if there are any. "Time Square", "Jubilee", and other pubs are all nice, and most of the bar tenders tend to be British.
St. Julian's/Paceville is not too far away, and you get to see the lovely Sliema coast. However, if you want to catch the bus (€0.47), most of the number 60s pass through St.Julian's, but you can always ask the driver. On Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays, there are usually special Night routes (used mostly by teenagers to get back home after a night out).
You can check this site:
http://www.atp.com.mt/atp/servlet/ControllerServlet?action=loadUserPage&userPageName=specialNight
for more information on how to get from Sliema<-->St.Julian's by bus (look up Route 62)
