Cape Town Safari in Cape Town
Posted: Mon February 9, 2009 08:34 AM UTC
Hi! I'm going to CT in May and really want to do a safari. Can anyone recommend several good ones? I really want the best experience possible, so am hoping for an overnight trip. And the more animals the better! Sadly, I also need something not so pricey. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Sorry to inform you that you cannot do genuine safaris in Cape Town. There are some attempts at offering "safari" experiences near to Cape Town, because of the demand from tourists like you. But they are nothing like the real safaris offered much further north/east in Africa.

Hi, i'm going to Cape Town in May too. I read reviews of some private game reserves around Cape Town and they didnt get very good reviews.

Alternatively, if you have a few days, you could rent a car and drive along the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth & Addo Elephant Park. That is what we are doing. You can also fly to PE from Cape Town. In Addo, you can do a self drive safari or stay at numerous lodges in the area that vary in price.

Here is an example of what tourists could experience on a genuine safari:

You have zero chance of experiencing that within 1000 kilometers of Cape Town. In this area you will not see truly free predators naturally hunting their choice of prey - all lions around here are fed by humans.

I agree with Gerald...The Addo Elephant park is great for Elephant viewing, but your true game parks are in Northern Kwa Zulu natal, and in Gauteng and Limpopo area.
