The uruguayan company Revelacion SA (Empresa General Artigas) serves both cities. Montevideo is 512Km far from Porto Alegre/BR in paved road.
This bus line departs from Montevideo always at 8PM, every weekday except saturday. There are two kind of buses: one is conventional with toilet, and the other has bending seats for sleeping and toilet. You may buy the bus ticket for conventional (R$54,82) and sleeper (R$126,71). These informations are from brazilian ANTT.
512Km on a south-american road may spend around 10hours journey.

Hi,

Check www.trescruces.com.uy (Montevideo bus terminal website - in spanish) for timetables and prices on any company doing that route.
You have EGA (as stated before) and TTL and both have very good and comfortable buses.
The distance from MVD is not 500 kms as posted, is 850 (aprox. 530 miles, perhaps that's the confussion) and is a very good road all along the way. According to that website, the trip is 11 to 12.30 hours long depending on the company.
The ticket is about USD 35 one way.
Regards and good luck.

thanks to "rafscab" for your informations, all you wrote is true with the exception of the cost, as I have already bought the ticket to Porto Allegre, I will leave to night at 8:00 for a ride 12 hours long, (accordingly to the time schedule) I booked a cama seat on the first floor of a cama bus for 2009 Huraguay pesos, which is about 89 dollars.
35 dollars for this ride is probably travelling in a cargo bus!

Sorry for that. I trusted the webpage application that said "calculate the price of the ticket" according to the distance.
Seems it isn't working properly (at least for international travel).
Enjoy your trip
