NY - Tips on typical NY cafes, restaurants and things to do? Posted: Thu February 5, 2009 08:14 PM UTC
In september we will go for 10 days to NY, really looking forward to it :-)
Next to the main tourist attractions we also want to visit some typical New Yorker things...
All tips on beneath things are very welcome:
- nice things to do/visit/eat in the Upper East Side as we will by staying there.
- nice cafés or pubs (with special view or loungy interior)
- good restaurants which are not too expensive or to grab a quick bite
- Bike rental, i heard from a colleague it is really nice to rent a bike, which would you recommend?
- Is there a 3D cinema in manhattan?
Tx a lot for your help,
Marijke

September is so beautiful here, perfect time to visit. Where are you staying on the UES?
Here's the info on the big 3D theater:

Fandango is the easiest way to buy tickets too.

One nice place for breakfast is Sarabeth's, Madison Ave. between 92 and 93 streets.
A good French rest. is Le Refuge, 82 St, near Lexington Ave.
Of course there are a half dozen different museums along the Eastern edge of Central Park.
The most common place to rent bikes is at Columbus Circle, at the SW corner of Central Park. And there is really a lot to see and enjoy in the park. I don't know if I would ride a bike out on the streets, although many people do.

Why only stay in the upper east side???? Manhattan is small so your options are endless.
Check out some of these great and very informative sites on New York:

Hi TexasDave, tx for the tips. Yeah we want to rent a bike not only to discover central park but other parts of the city. I'll do some research.

That's right near me! Great neighborhood, you'll find lots to do and plenty of places to eat nearby. I'm a little worried that you're in an apt. though. Did you find the place through a friend? The reason I ask is that most short-term apt. rentals are illegal and there are many many scams out there. Please, please, do NOT send anyone money in advance!

I wouldn't recommend riding a bicycle outside of Central Park. It is way to risky with the traffic, especially the taxis. One thing that you should definitely see is the Frick Museum. It is a smaller art museum on the Upper East Side that was originally the Frick family's mansion and has a very good collection of paintings.

This isn't near the Upper East Side, but my favorite area right now is NOLITA (North of Little Italy). There are some really interesting new shops with a lot of one-of-a-kind items and a lot of great, moderately priced restaurants as well. I would catch it before it becomes too touristy, which I'm afraid is already happening.
If you want a true, old school New Yorker thing to do, I would see who's playing at the Cafe Carlyle at the Hotel Carlyle. Woody Allen plays there as do a lot of other big names. If you don't go for a performance, at least pop in to see the murals or have a drink at Bemelman's bar (he's the guy who illustrated the Madeline books). It's on the Upper East Side, so you'll be close by. I can't think of anything more New Yorker-y than that.

1. The bicycle thing. Riding in Central Park is great. And also, you can ride along the Westside Highway. It has great views of the Hudson and you can ride from Battery Park up to Fort Tryon where the Cloisters are.

2. I don't know the UES well, but for me..it's a little stuffy, nice..but I think for folks from europe like yourselves, you'll enjoy the downtown scene more..areas like Union Square, SoHo..East Village and Lower East Side..
3. Don't be afraid of Brooklyn. Please walk the Brooklyn Bridge, even take your bicycle across. This is where you'll find real NYC neighboorhoods, like Park Slope, Cobble Hill, North Williamsburg (first Brooklyn stop on the L Train), Fort Greene, Brooklyn Heights..just look those up on google for more information.
