Avignon How far are these places from Avignon?
Posted: Tue February 3, 2009 07:26 PM UTC
I was hoping to find out how far these cities are from Avignon and the best way to get there. We are traveling early from Paris to Avignon and want to add another stop from one of these choices, so input on which you think is the best would be great as well.

Arles
The Camargue
Orange

the Camargue is a wild horses and bulls swampy beautiful area, Arles is dotted with Roman ruins, and Orange is the ancestral home of the Dutch royal family, the house of Orange.

so depends on your likings only you know that. They are all very close to Avignon. Arles 36 km, Sainte-Marie-de-la-Mer the head city to the Camargue is 39 km from Arles, and Orange is 31 km from Avignon, for example.
km distance can be had by looking at viamichelin.fr or mappy.fr they can be change to english. Its what I use in France if do not know the route.

It is a while ago since I stayed in Arles but I remember going to Avignon by bus and having lunch there after touring the Palace. On another day I went to Orange, which was not a long bus ride, toured all of the sites before returning in time for dinner.
The Camargue was a full day trip which I booked up for in the hotel and it took in several other places on a circular tour.
You did not say how long you will be in Avignon. You can get some idea of distances from www.viamichelin.com
If you are limited to time I would choose 1. Orange. 2. Arles. 3 The Camargue

Thanks so much for the quick replies. I guess more info would be helpful. We will be staying in Paris and are taking a day trip to Avignon. We don't want to see just Avignon while we are there for the day and want to spend a half day doing something else from those choices. We will be using public transportation though. Do either of you know long the commute on public transportation is to these places and is it available? I am putting together an rough itinerary to make sure we aren't too rushed but get a chance to see as much as we can.

I think it would be unrealistic to visit another place in one day from Paris - what are your train times?

Oh dear, one day is enough to see Avignon alone. And, using public transport even more !! i suggest to concentrate solely in Avignon on your one day trip by transports. The trip on TGV fast train takes about 2H40 to 3 hrs each way, and of course trips are available from Paris Gare de Lyon.

Thanks so much. I always tend to try and squeeze in too much and that was one of the reasons I wanted to check the distance and transportation times to see if I was being reasonable! I have posted another question with some other day trips we are thinking about and some more info about how long we will be in Paris etc. Thanks so much for your help.
