Laos WiFi / hotspots in Laos
Posted: Sat January 31, 2009 02:47 AM UTC
Thinking of taking a mini laptop to Laos next month. Was wondering whether anyone else has (and whether they wished they hadn't) and if they found plenty of hotspots to use?
Thanks

I saw a few wifi spots in Vientiane but didn't notice any in Luang Prabang.Unless it is very important you need to access the net everyday,i think it might be better to rely on internet cafes which are common in both these places. In Luang Prabang it is 1,000kip per minute or a bit more than us1 per 10minutes-that's expensive so i didn't use it and stayed quite locked away from the outside world. Noticed in Joma Cafe (Vientiane) they were selling internet cards by time block.

Personally, IMHO,i would not want to carry around a laptop the whole day while sight-seeing and stop for internet access. Plus, gotta be extra careful. PDA phones and other smaller gadgets would be a good option. But it really depends how important it is to have net access and reasons u need it. If it is to stay connected, you can purchase their local telco sim pack. I am told Tigo is the more economical one but in very remote areas, there might be no access.A fair no. of locals use it.

Thanks Teevee, I've pretty much talked myself out of buying a mini-laptop, as they are next to useless except for travel.
The main reason was to keep in touch with my son, but I have decided just to take my phone & send him text's.

Great! If that's the case use sms and save the hassle.Check with local telco what are your rates should u not want to by local sim. But it should be cheaper if u do and want to send several texts a day since u r there for a while.
